Mauritius finds itself at the crossroads of innovation, investment, and ecological transition. In recent days, the spotlight has fallen on three key developments: a proposed citizen-centric data hub aimed at fortifying cybersecurity; Stevenhills' strategic debut on the Stock Exchange of Mauritius with Axys as lead partner; and MCB's expanded environmental commitment via the Plastic Odyssey expedition.
Data sovereignty under review: A National Cyber Hub in the works
A fresh ICT blueprint is on the horizon, with personal data protection positioned as a national imperative. Minister Avinash Ramtohul has called out critical shortcomings in Mauritius' digital infrastructure, advocating for a unified data hub to streamline governance and reinforce cyber resilience. He also flagged outdated legislative frameworks and the nation's slide in the global e-Government Development Index.
The planned overhaul aims to elevate digital public services, inject momentum into gender parity in STEM disciplines, and broaden the tech ecosystem beyond the saturated corridors of Ébène.
Stevenhills makes a calculated bet on the stock market
Sports betting firm Stevenhills is preparing to go public on the main board of the Stock Exchange of Mauritius. Backed by financial services firm Axys, the IPO will offer shares at Rs 18 apiece, with a minimum subscription threshold of 1,000 units. Investors can expect a dividend of 62 cents just 11 days after listing.
The family-run enterprise, founded in 2008, has its eyes set on long-term growth and operational sustainability. Plans are also in motion for the inauguration of a 20th retail outlet in Curepipe. The company logged a remarkable 9.4 million wagers in 2024, marking a two-year growth surge of 17%.
Plastic Odyssey makes port in Mauritius with MCB's backing
The Mauritius Commercial Bank deepens its environmental commitments through its “Your Card For Change” initiative, funding the island stop of the Plastic Odyssey expedition on April 14 in Port Louis. The floating research vessel is on a global mission to combat plastic pollution and will host a series of talks, workshops, and exhibitions to galvanize public awareness.
Since 2019, “Your Card For Change” has channelled nearly Rs 15 million into biodiversity projects. With this latest move, MCB reinforces its role as a sustainability champion, promoting circular economy models and scalable recycling solutions for Mauritius.
Labour tensions: Over 1,500 grievances filed under Special Allowance Act
The Ministry of Labour has received 1,503 complaints targeting 321 employers for non-compliance with the Special Allowance Act, enacted in December 2024. The legislation was designed to guarantee special financial support for employees during turbulent economic times.
Despite over Rs 1 billion already disbursed by the MRA to more than 8,000 employers facing liquidity issues, delays in implementation remain rife. To date, only 151 grievances have been formally resolved, exposing gaps in employer accountability and enforcement.
Renewable leap: 15 MW solar plant slated for Amaury
In a move aligned with Mauritius' green energy ambitions, SeaBrew Solar Ltd is set to develop a 15-megawatt photovoltaic farm in Amaury. The site spans 46 arpents of leased land from Alteo Agri Ltd and will operate under a 20-year lease.
The project will employ up to 75 workers during construction, with five permanent staff maintaining the facility thereafter. At the end of its lifecycle, the 29,750 solar panels will be dismantled and recycled, aligning with Mauritius' circular energy objectives and reducing its reliance on coal and fossil fuels.
