How powerful does it have to be to run a household?
We are looking into exchanging 7 brand new generators (some petrol, some diesel) about 6,5 kva each into a more powerful one.
How much could one get for each? Any ideas?

Nims

well ebony i become  a little bit  of  expert.

15-25 kv generators  brand new are about 13- 15k USD-  yes  that expensive. You  buy  second hand one  for 7-9k Ghana  cedis but this  go  quickly.

for  6.5kv you  can buy  a Kinpor brand  for 1,800-2,400 Ghana Cedis or Rushton  for 2,500 ghana  cedis

Thanks Nims! I know absolutely nothing about generators so I am really grateful.
That´s really expensive. I realise that we did a good deal when we bought them from some desparate Irish salesmen :).
What kind of household can a 15 kv generator support? If you need AC for a couple of bed rooms, fridge, deep freezer and light would that work?

Nims

15kv should   carry a three bedroom house with all appliances.

I will not go into the deep technical calculations to evaluate the needed Generator power in KVA, to commonly knows amperes.

1 KVA = 1000 VA
Voltage x Amperes = VA

in Ghana, Voltage is 220 and amperes are the needed consumption. Each device indicates the consumption in Amp or Watts ( Watts/220 = Amp)
In your case sum up all devices you want to run at the same time on the generator and you will be able to get the Effective VA needed.
Add 10 to 15% extra capacity, and you are done.

Hope this helps, for prices I did not yet relocate to Ghana to give advice ;)

Nims

cool joe, I  am confused. Can we have this in English

Cool_Joe

Nims,

I will go with examples maybe it would be easier.
6 lamp bubbles of 60 watts = 360 Watts = 1.63 Amps
1 fridge 1.2 Apms
Plat Screen TV 300 Watts = 1.36 Amp
A/C 3 Amps
1.63+1.2+1.36+3=7.19 Amps
7.19 Apms + 15% = 8.25 Amps
8.25*220 = 1815 VA = 1.8 KVA

please note the values I given are just examples. you should get them from each device.

Nims: Lol! I thought I was the only one who didn´t understand and was too afraid to show it.
Cool Joe: I think that I finally understand it. Thanks.

hi,friend

generator divide into single phase and three phase.

The single phase 1kva=1kw

The three phase  1kva=0.8kw
