Hi,

From my personal experience as having held a motorcycle license while not being an Indian national, if you are staying for a little while on a student or work VISA, you can apply for a local license which you will get once you pass the test. You will require your proof of address and other documents for your application.

It will help if you do not have an international license; especially if you wish to avoid the fines.

Another tip is that in India, you cannot be fined more than once in a day for the same offence except for overspeeding; just keep that "traffic challan receipt" handy throughout the day.
