Living alone as an expat in KL

looksjustlikethesun

Hello expats,

Has anyone here lived alone in KL (Damansara Perdana)? Is it a terribly isolating experience? I came here with my partner (who is Malaysian) and we planned to live with her folks for a while. It's been a few months and the stresses of my reliance on her (I have no car  :shy ) / living at the family home / perhaps adjusting to life here my has put a real strain on us and we both need some space (which I hope will save the relationship).

I'm thinking of moving within walking distance to work. I frankly don't have enough saved for a car right now so hanging out in other areas wouldn't be that easy.

From what I've heard, it's tough to find anything less than a 1 year tenancy so I guess I just want to get some insights on this before I take the plunge. Would sharing with others be a better move?

I am afraid your story is only too familiar and on a par with people who come to Malaysia to find work, only to leave about 4-5 months later, when they have no more hope or cash. At least  you found work.

There are flat shares available, and some will accept shorter than one year agreements. Living with other expats would probably be a good move and somewhere with a swimming pool will give you some plus points in terms of relaxation and date nights, if you intend to still see your girlfriend.

Here are some options:

This might be of interest and you could start your own flatshare and select people to live with:

The apartment mentioned above is now available from 11 July.

Thanks so much for your help, Gravitas.  :)

I've been to see studios in the area. For anyone else in the same boat, the 'Soho' buildings have a courtyard within which has a campus like feel to it. Not really genuine KL living but it could help the transition.

I've been looking through those sites you mentioned, with a few bookings made.

Thanks again.
