US airlines and checked luggage

wondering9

Does anyone have a sense of how strict American and Delta are in real life with the size of checked luggage? I'm looking at some luggage options that are literally only 3/4" over the maximum (62.75 instead of 62 inches total length). The oversize fee can be substantial.

I know what the websites say (and I can do my own speculating about what seems "logical"). But does anyone have experience (or good solid hearsay) on how fussy they have been in real life recently?

Also, if it is not a suitcase but a sturdy plastic footlocker, is that likely to be a problem? A footlocker seems like it would be a more useful thing to have in the long run... but not worth it if it's going to cause problems during the move.
