Prescription of a visit to a specialist

Hi, I have a doubt about the possibilty to choose to which specialist to go to if you have a prescription by your family doctor (here "huisarts"). My family doctor wrote me a prescription of a visit to an ophthalmologist, and the prescription has the name of a certain doctor. However, when I asked if this particular doctor was conventioned (geconventionnerd) he said that he didn't know and that if I wanted I could find another ophthalmologist at the same center (AZ Sint Lucas). Since I have checked and this doctor is not conventionned, and beside he doesn't have any spot free until three months, I would like to go to another doctor. Can I contact him directly and make an appointment, even though the prescription has the name of another doctor? Or should I go through the hospital itself? I would be very thankful for any information or suggestion.

You are completely free in the choice of doctor. Most of the time, the "family doctor" offers a specific name because he knows the person.
By cons, it is true that for some medical tests, wait times can be long. But again, nothing forbid you to contact different institutions to know their availability.

Thank you very much! Just to be sure, I will also ask my Mutualiteit if they will reimbourse the visit as a "with prescription of the family doctor" (met veerwijzing door de huisarts) even if the name of the doctor is different than the one on the prescription (but it's the same field, so I think it will be ok).
