I am in my 70’s and moving to Varna with my husband. We have research for the answers to paying tax on our UK pensions. It would seem that we have to remit and pay our taxes to the UK. We initially thought we would be paying this  to the Bulgarian Government as we would be domicile there. The tax is much lower in Bulgaria. Any thoughts anyone?

I think you should check this document for all your questions

It would be very strange to pay taxes in Bulgaria, for a pension received in the UK. Moreover you probably will continue using your UK bank account. But still worth the efforts to check this.

Nope! you don't

UK state pensions for tax residents in Bulgaria are taxed in the UK. UK private pensions are also taxed in the UK as Bulgarian Tax Authorities will not sign and stamp the DT Individual form as pensions are not subject to tax in Bulgaria. The only way to avoid tax on UK private pension is to transfer the fund to QROP in Bulgaria (Allianz or UBB), there is no transfer fee even with the changes they made on 30 October 2024 when HMRC shut the door through Malta.    Â
