I’m thinking of moving to Portugal permanently from UK in the next few years and would like to know what steps I’d need to take and in what order;
Buying a property?
Apply for work visa?
Resident visa?
Permanent resident entitlement?
Brexit ramifications?
Any advice would be appreciated,

Hi all,
We are a family of four getting very excited about the prospect of a move to Portugal in 2022. We run our own small company and are a bit confused how to locate it and how best to pay ourselves, but otherwise keen to explore neighbourhoods this October and in Spring and take the plunge in the summer.
Would love advice on everything and will share anything interesting we find!
John

My name is AST and I am a retired disabled physician from the states. I have 100% disability from the states and have been here for 3 years. My wife is a highly valuable tech worker for an international company and she finally got her visa. I need to know how she can get me on her IRS as a fully disabled dependent to help with the large taxes she is paying. I am working to try to get my visa, but I heard I can get disability paperwork from my doctors here that she can submit to Social Security to help give us a break on our taxes. Is anyone familiar or aware of this process? So, we can get a break on our taxes. What do I have to do with my doctors and to whom do I have to see for her to claim me as a dependent with the social security office to reduce our tax rate?
Thank You,
AST
Hi AST, Welcome
It is not enough to point out in your yearly tax statement (declaração anual de IRS) that you suffer from 100% disability. You will need to formalise this fact with the AT - Portuguese Tax Authority.
Please read here, some guidelines about what you have to do (translation required):
If you don't understand this, you can open a new thread with your doubts.

Hi John, we're a family of 5 from Armenia. Wife and kids are French citizens which will make it easier with the paperwork and visa hassle. I'm Armenian. We actually can't still decide between Portugal and Canada as the better place for raising our kids. Portugal just seems the safest and most affordable place in Western Europe and it's just so darn gorgeous. I too am looking for any tips, advice, thoughts on whether or not Portugal is a good idea for living and raising kids.

Hello hello!
Howard here. In Canada, EU-passport holder (ancestry), looking to move to Portugal.
While I realize I do not need visas/permits, I am looking for guidance on the formalities. Specifically, as I will not have any income from employment in Portugal, can I still pay whatever the cost of the national health care service, so I can use it? And if I choose to rent out my apartment (I will buy one) via AirBNB - would that qualify as Portuguese income, so I can pay income tax? As you can tell, I am not looking for freebies.
Also, if I should ever want to apply for citizenship - how is the residency tracked for someone without local employment income? Would the AirBNB income be sufficient? Or does this not even apply and I am worrying unnecessarily?
Any guidance, referrals to the right lawyers/consultants will be greatly appreciated. Until then - I am reading the posts here and getting truly excited about the move!
Have a great day everyone!
Hi Howard
We are retired from the UK live in Portugal we do not work but we do pay taxes every year. You have to register for the national health service we did ours online very easy once you have the paperwork with your utente number on it you then take that to your local medical centre & they print off another piece of paper & that’s it you will need your utente number for prescriptions, appointments & you pay as you go along.
As for paying taxes your Portuguese fiscal (NIF) is how they determine how much tax you pay as I said we do not earn in Portugal but we pay our taxes.
As for lawyers that depends on where in Portugal you want to live as always best to seek 1 in your area.
I think you are worrying a bit unnecessarily. Hope this helps oh you will need a Portuguese bank account.
Jean
Hi Jane,
Regarding the national health service for a retired person, where can I found some relevant information?

Despite never even visiting Europe, I have in my head to retire to Portugal, as I have heard it is an awesome choice. Probably 5-10 years before my husband and I each retire. We own our own businesses, so have to sell those, and in the process hope to have some time to travel, and check out some of our choices
Good choice; have a look at the international statistics regarding the quality of life, CoVid etc. It is a quiet country, sunshine 12 months, good and tolerant people etc.
Me and my wife take this decision for 2 years, was the best what we can do, we are happy here.
Reg,
Chris

Hello…my name is Bonnie…
I’m American, and presently live in Atlanta. I was fortunate* to be able to retire from my professional career (management consultancy) at 50. I now own my own entrepreneurial business, which I can run from anywhere that has a good internet connection. 😎
I’ve traveled through much of the world, and now have my heart on finding a permanent part-time home in Portugal, ideally with dual citizenship.
I’m sure that I’ll benefit greatly from being on this board, and thank you for welcoming me!
*i.e., I saved almost every penny I earned! 😆

Hi, I'm Carol, I moved to Portugal in 2019, after exploring and deciding in 2016 it was the place for me. I currently live in the Cadaval - Bombarral area. I am learning portuguese- slowly It's a challenge to socialize and meet people and there are no english meet-up groups in the área (Caldas da Rainha to Torres Vedras), so I am looking at setting up one, hopefully soon. I will be looking for others interested in having one. I am Canadian, and this is my first move to another country. I hope to be able to meet, in-person other english speaking (local and international) people, again soon
Cheers
Hi CarolÂ
My wife and I are hoping to be in this area by the end of the year so could well be something we would be interested in. I'll keep an eye on this thread.

Hello Friends and Folks
I am a newbie and planning to apply for D7 Visa for Portugal. I am from Canada. I am a Finance Analyst. Just wondering how to get the NIF (the Portuguese equivalent of Canadian SIN, I learnt so fat) from Canada and also wondering about opening a Bank Account in Portugal from Canada. Hoping to learn from everyone here.
Hello to all
I am an American veteran, with Midwest roots. I have a desire to do an "advance-scouting" endeavor, this Winter, to assess the options and opportunities to move to your country. My exploration would be highly aided by some of your recommendations, as a starting point/base camp, from which to begin a 3 month exploration, of places which might be the right fit.
I'd love to be able to tap into this network of friendly expats, to give me a "leg up" and assist me in shortening the learning curve, toward finding the right fit.
Thank you in advance for the courtesy.
Sincere regards,
David
