US elections & your expat life (testimonies)

Ameerah Arjanee

Hi everyone. I’m a content writer for Expat Magazine, and we are planning on writing an article about what American expats abroad (and non-American expats living in the US) think about the upcoming presidential elections. How do you think the results will affect your life as an expat? Might it affect your decision to stay where you are or return to your home country? What are your worries and hopes? Do you think the result might affect practical issues such as your taxes, pension, or prospects for getting a visa for your spouse (if she/he is not a US citizen)? Thank you in advance for sharing your thoughts with us.

I don't think this is the proper forum to introduce the rancor and disingenuous nature of U.S. political "leadership".  There's plenty of that to be found on Facebook, X, TruthSocial, etc.

I view this site as a sanctuary of hope and a platform to help each other realize our dreams.

My wife and I have already voted in NJ for Kamala Harris. We are buying a home in Daimuz, Spain for extended vacations and to share with our family. However, if Trump wins, we will stay in Spain. I have voted in every presidential election since 1972. I was stunned when Trump won in 2016. It was a case of everything falling right for Trump and wronbg for Hillary Clinton. I think part of the Trump vote was "hey, he's not a politician, let's give hime a chance and see what happens." Well we saw what happened. Yet over 70 million Americans voted for him in 2020, and Trump refused to accepts the certified results. I am both astounded and ashamed that after all that, this election is still listed as a toss up. I simply can't understand how so many Americans can see him as good for the country. Yet, as history shows bad people have come to power before in other nations, and all with catastrophic results. I look forward to reading your article. @Ameerah Arjanee

Without getting into the weeds, US politics is exactly why I'm here. Appreciate learning more about expat opportunities and challenges.

We came here before Trump was elected.  From our perspective, because we are here, it made no difference at all between Obama, Trump, and Biden.

Exactly what one would expect, when living in a different country.

I will say that the typical Spanish person has given me much less grief over President Trump than other nationalities have.  Perhaps because they, too, have had (and maybe have)  Presidents that they are not particularly fond of.

My wife and I just bought a house in Daimuz, Spain. "Presidents that they are not particularly fond of, " does not come close to describing Trump. He will be a dangerous, dishonest demagogue who only cars about himself. He will make life in America for women, gays, black and brown people, poor people, and disabled people. His attitude to Zelensky and Putin is a threat to the entire continent. His disdain for trying to manage climate change is a threat to the entire planet. By the end of this term, the American democracy could end.

@njadwriter. We are right there with you. So so disappointed in our country. We had our hopes raised but they all fell to pieces. Now we have to complete our plans to move to Spain. We have considered areas west of Malaga but in June it was hotter there than S. Florida. We’re now considering areas west of Alicante, maybe the Denia area. Planning our next trip for March

I will remind those who are terrified of Trump ;that we already know much of his behaviouor.  And we survived.  We may not like it, but we survived, and the good news is (at least one can hope), this is it.  No more terms.

What I observe are the extremes of the pendulum.  Whenever we have stuff that swings too far one way, then in the next cycle it will most likely swing the other.  It would be better if that pendulum did not swing so far to either side, but I'm not holding my breath.

I think, I could be wrong, that most are middle of the roaders who don't care for either of those extremes.  But the squeaky wheel gets the most attention

@BlueMoonx47 Yes the majority of us survived his first term although many did not due to his failure on handling the pandemic.  Sadly this same majority + feel that time it’s going to be a lot different. I believe that the guardrails we had back in 2016 will no longer be in place. I hope you’re right and I’m proven wrong
