Local police station is the only way. It is easier if you pay a lawyer to do it for you, just a matter of money.

They are two different things: the NIE is your personal fiscal number, and your TIE is your residence permit/foreigner ID (with your NIE on it).

The NIE alone is pretty easy, and you'd need this if you want to buy a Spanish holiday home (and stay less than 90 days on your passport's visa-free allowance). The TIE is the final step of your residence/residence visa application, and you'd need this if you want to be a legal Spanish resident (and be able to stay more than 90 days).

NLV (popular residence option for pensioners and those of independent means)

There are plenty of immigration attorneys or gestors who can help you. They're not free, but they typically make it quicker and easier. However, there's plenty of info online about these processes and many (most?) folks do it themselves.

Perhaps you can clarify so we can point you in the right direction? Do you want the NIE so you can buy a property? Or do you want to relocate to Spain and live there indefinitely (i.e. a residence visa is needed)?

Are you a retiree or independently wealthy (i.e. NLV) or do you need to work and get paid in Spain (i.e. working visa of some kind)?

Hmmm... that's pretty much fobbing you off. There's nothing to stop a company interviewing you today... and helping you with the immigration process to get legal residence (and your TIE).

The NIE alone is no good. They're saying that they only want to interview folks who are already legally entitled to work in Spain. (Which is pretty standard in many countries, not just Spain.) At least, this is my read on the situation. You can check by asking if you really only need your NIE (i.e. your fiscal number, not your right to work) to get an interview. As I previously mentioned, getting the NIE is pretty easy (ask the Spanish embassy).

For a non-EU person to get legal residence (with the right to work) is very challenging without a job offer. It's probably not worth the aggravation.

If you have some savings and you're determined to move to Spain (and you're confident in your employability), then you could consider the NLV. This is a non-working visa, but you'd be a legal resident in Spain, and it would be far easier to get (and attend) interviews. With a formal job offer (and a cooperative future employer) you can change your residence status.

Or, you do interviews with companies that will consider hiring non-EU foreigners, and are prepared to provide a formal job offer/contract and help with the immigration process.

He’s said if I get the nie number as this can take a couple of months so will it be easy enough when I’m in Spain or try before I leave
