Regional Cost of Living Survey

bepmoht

A quick regional cost of living survey. My wife and I just finished two rather large (Bacon/cheese/burgers) on a bulky roll. Included veggies, tomato, lettuce, corn). Big chunks of Bacon probably 1/4 lbs worth. French fries included, I’d say medium size. Total cost of two portions delivered to our door 40 reais.

We live in the boondocks. I was wondering what this type of fare runs in the various areas of the Expat world of Brazil?

A Big Mac, fries and a Coke costs R$37 delivered in Ilhéus.

Can't touch those tiny town delivery prices in Rio or Petropolis. Everything we need in both cities we walk to because it's too expensive to order. You can eat that cheap in both cities, but, you need to walk to the places, and they usually are one off restaurants without website access. For example, outside our apartment in Copa is a guy with a cart who makes a killer X-duplo burger com tudo for R$17........

Just for fun last week, I looked up our usual McDonald's order in Canada on the website here......R$181 delivered plus a tip. Not happening.

And, since someone will ask......

Big Mac x 2

Double 1/4 w/cheese

McChicken

Large fries x 3

Apple pie x 2

What are the boondocks again?  I could not find this on google maps.

Since we are on the topic of cost of living - I heard that it is cheaper to buy jewelry (mainly in anticipation for some yet to be determined future for one or more of my sons) in Brazil than in the US.

Where would that mythical El-Dorado be found?

Sorry if I heard wrong... I may be losing my hearing with age....

We get a 35cm homemade pizza with 2 different toppings (ie 2 pizza types) for 2 people, for R$58 + R$6 delivery to our house.

I don't eat pizza. I cook an occasional hamburger at home. I never do delivery or takeout.

I mostly eat fish and seafood and fresh veggies.

What does sea bass, grouper, tuna, swordfish, salmon, big shrimp, octopus, squid, etc. cost where you live?

They cost R$80 to R$110 per kilo in Ilhéus.

Back in July there was a thread on cost of living and the Numbeo dot com site was mentioned. Numbeo doesn't have much detail on Brazil but it has some numbers.....

I just went shopping for today's/tomorrow's family meals. The house will be full.

Feijão verde = R$20/kg

*300ml of manteiga de garrafa

*500g of castanha de caju

*2 small blocks of rapadura

*=R$69.00

#carre de cordeiro (rack of lamb)

#2 pacotes pão de alho (garlic bread)

#2X2litros de guaraná

#3X2kg gelo (ice)

2kg linguiça de galinha (chicken sausage)

#2kg asa de galinha (chicken wings)

#=R$292.00

There was a lot more BUT the basic idea is that it is pretty cheap here.

Gotta like that!

I just bought a 750ml bottle of Johnnie Walker Red whisky at a supermarket in Petropolis for R$58........!!!!

FWIW that's about 1/3 the price of a comparable store Canada.
