If you are planning to move to South Korea with your pet, you may be wondering how to proceed. It should not be difficult if you are aware of the regulations established by South Korean authorities. You must also adhere to the regulations by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and consult your airline.

Good to know: Small cats and dogs may travel with you inside the cabin. Others will have to travel in the lower-level compartment of the aeroplane.

Proceedings

You are advised to contact the South Korea Quarantine Bureau before proceeding, as formalities vary from country to country depending on where the pet is coming from. Both cats and dogs must be vaccinated against rabies and be in possession of a vaccination certificate. They must also have a health card issued by the veterinary authority of your country, as well as an identification microchip.

90-day old pets must obtain the test results to verify the effectiveness of the anti-rabies vaccine. This should be conducted no less than 30 days and no more than 24 months prior to the date of entry in South Korea. If you wish to import more than four pets, you are required to obtain an import declaration at the Quarantine Bureau at least 30 days before the date of arrival.

As for birds, only those from the following countries are authorised to enter South Korea: Germany, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Spain, the United States, France, Hungary, Netherlands, Poland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Some airlines may require a document issued by a veterinarian certifying that your pet is free from any diseases transmissible to humans.

Good to know:

Rabies-free countries are Australia, Cayman Islands, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Switzerland, among others.

On arrival

Your pet is likely to be placed in quarantine upon arrival in South Korea. However, this will not be the case if the results show 0.5 IU/ml or more antibodies and your pet has an identification microchip. The pet will also be examined by a licensed veterinarian, who will determine if the animal is healthy and can be allowed to enter Korean territory.

Pet stores in South Korea

Pet stores can be found all over South Korea. Most pet stores have cats and dogs for sale, while rabbits, rodents, and other pets can usually be purchased at supermarket chains or specialised pet stores in larger cities. South Korean pet stores sell all kinds of pet equipment, accessory, and food. Many pet stores also carry pet food from Western countries.

Veterinarians in South Korea

You can easily find a veterinarian in any city across South Korea. Most vets will also speak English. Treatments and vaccinations for pets are quite affordable in South Korea.
