Outdoor activities in Oman

Oman's diverse landscape of mountains, deserts, and wadis (valleys) offers fantastic hiking and trekking opportunities, from challenging mountain walks to scenic strolls through lush valleys.

Hiking

Jebel Shams, Oman's highest peak, is known as the ‘Mountain of the Sun' and offers some of the most spectacular hiking experiences in the country. The balcony walk (W6 Route) follows the edge of Wadi Ghul, also known as the ‘Grand Canyon of Arabia', offering stunning views of the canyon below. The summit trekking is recommended for experienced hikers, as going to the top of Jebel Shams can be complicated, but you can see the panoramic view from above.

The village walk (W18b) trail connects several traditional villages, offering insight into the local lifestyles and stunning views of terraced farms. Diana's Point is a shorter, less challenging hike that leads to a lookout point named after Princess Diana, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

Oman is home to many bird species, and you may spot eagles, hawks, and Arabian partridges on your hike. These animals are commonly found in the countryside, especially in mountain villages. Many trails pass through or are close to traditional Omani villages, where you can experience local culture and hospitality. In some areas, you can find farms on conventional trees such as terraces, palm trees, and incense.

Winter (October to March) is the best time for hiking in Oman, with cooler temperatures and clear skies. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, making it ideal for longer hikes. During the summer months, the heat can make hiking difficult, especially at lower elevations or in more exposed areas.

Therefore, during summer, hiking is recommended in the early morning or late evening in shady areas. The monsoon season in Dhofar is a unique time for trekking in southern Oman, as the landscape turns green and temperatures drop.

Camping

Camping is a popular activity in Oman, especially during the cooler months, with many expats choosing to camp in the desert, such as on the Wahiba Sands or along the country's beautiful coastline.

Beaches

With a long coastline along the Arabian Sea, Oman is home to many pristine beaches. Expats can enjoy activities like swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, and beach picnics at places like Qurum Beach, Al Mughsair Beach, and Ras Al Hadd.

Oman also has some of the best diving spots in the region, with rich marine life and coral reefs. Popular diving locations include the Daymaniyat Islands, Musandam, and the waters around Salalah.

Sailing and boating

Sailing and boat trips are popular, with options ranging from traditional dhow cruises to modern yachts.

Often called "Norwegian Arabia," the Musandam Peninsula is known for its dramatic fjord, purely pure water, and isolation. Dhow cruises are very popular there, as they provide the potential for underwater swimming, observing dolphins, and studying hidden gems. The rugged coastline and calm waters make it a popular destination for sailors and kayakers.

Winter (October to March) is the best time for boating in Oman. You'll find mild temperatures, calm seas, and ideal conditions for outdoor activities. Summer (April to September) can get very hot, with temperatures often exceeding 40 °C. Boating is still possible, but it's important to prepare for the heat. Always check the weather conditions before you set off, especially during the Khareef season or if you are planning a longer trip. Make sure that the boat is equipped with necessary protective equipment, such as a life jacket, lightning, and the main first aid supplies.

Fishing

Oman's rich marine life makes it an ideal destination for fishing enthusiasts. Deep-sea fishing trips are also available for fish such as tuna, horse mackerel, and marlin. However, make sure you are familiar with the local ocean rules, especially in the protected areas and fishery rules.

Luxurious yachts

For a more luxurious sailing experience, yacht charters are available in Muscat and other coastal cities. Yacht charters can be customized for day trips, overnight stays, or longer voyages. They offer modern amenities and are ideal for private parties, corporate events, or simply enjoying the open sea.

Marinas

Located in Muscat's prestigious Al Mouj area, this modern marina offers world-class facilities for yachts and boats. Al Mouj Marina provides mooring, fuel, and maintenance services, as well as access to nearby restaurants and shops.

Located near the historic Muttra region, the marina Bandar Al Rowdha is a popular place for yachts and offers easy access to the key attractions of Muscat. The marina offers the rental of boats, charters, and various services, including supply, repair, and diving excursions.

Important:

To operate a boat in Oman, especially for commercial purposes, proper licensing is required. This includes compliance with safety standards and that operators have the required qualifications. Since Oman is committed to preserving its marine environment, boat owners must comply with regulations on waste disposal, mooring, and fishing to protect coastal and marine ecosystems.

Exploring wadis

Wadi Shab is one of the most popular wadis in Oman, famous for its turquoise pools, waterfalls, and lush vegetation. The trail takes you through a gorge with several waterways. The highlight is a hidden cave with a waterfall at the end of the wadi.

Wadi Bani Khalid is one of the most picturesque wadis in Oman, known for its large, clear pools and dramatic rock formations. The trail takes you through a valley filled with palm trees, leading to deep blue pools where you can swim and relax. For adventurous travelers, there's a more challenging hike that takes you deeper into the wadi.

Known for its narrow and winding roads, Snake Gorge offers an exciting canyoning experience with sections for rock climbing, swimming, and rock climbing. This is a more technical and adventurous area for hiking, swimming, and mountain climbing.

Situated close to Wadi Shab, Wadi Tiwi is less crowded but no less beautiful, with lush plantations, clear pools, and traditional villages. The trail involves a combination of village walking, pool crossing, and rock climbing. This is a relaxing, scenic hike, perfect for those seeking a mild adventure.

Exploring the desert

Oman's vast desert is perfect for dune bashing, an adrenaline-pumping activity where you drive a four-wheel-drive vehicle over sand dunes. Make sure to have a short training session before venturing across the Omani deserts, as there is no mobile network in many remote places. It is also more suitable to have at least two cars while driving off-road.

History and culture in Oman

Oman has a rich history and has many forts, castles, and archaeological places. Some of the famous sites include Nizwa Fort, Bahla Fort (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the ancient city of Al Baleed in Salalah. For those interested in culture and history, Oman has several museums, such as Muscat National Museum, Sultanate of Armed Forces Museum, Oman Across Ages Museum, and Bait Al Zubair Museum.

Social and recreational activities in Oman

Oman has a wide range of restaurants offering a variety of international cuisines. Although the nightlife here is more low-key than in some other Gulf countries, there are still bars, lounges, and club hotels where expats can socialize and listen to music.

Muscat has several modern shopping centers, including Muscat City Center and Oman Avenues Mall. Traditional markets such as Mutrah Souq offer a different shopping experience, offering local handicrafts, spices, and souvenirs.

Oman has several cinemas showing the latest films, most of them located in shopping malls. Cultural events such as music concerts and theater performances can be enjoyed at venues such as the Royal Opera House Muscat.

Many hotels and complexes with spa facilities in Oman offer luxurious spas, health programs, and fitness classes.

There are several yoga studios and gyms. Gyms and fitness centers usually offer a wide range of classes and facilities, from traditional gyms to specialist studios such as pilates and martial arts.
