Ebay-like-site in Icleand by bossybadger

Hi, I want to know whether there is an ebay-like-site in iceland for games, books etc. Auction website preferably. But I want it to be Icelandic - so that I don't have to order it from US etc. Thanks in advance

deong

The closest thing I know of is bland.is. It's not an auction site, it's more of a classified ads site like craigslist. It's pretty popular though, so it's worth a look to see if you can find what you want. Read More

Kennitala by chinasmom2000

We are through UTL and my significant other has gotten his work permit. However, we were under the impression that we could get our Kennitala before we went. Now we are being told that we have to be physically present in Iceland in order to do ...

There is sort of a Catch-22 where you're supposed to get a kennitala to come here, but you need to come here to get a kennitala. However, it seems that there are lots of little workarounds people use to deal with it. I was able to get mine without ... Read More

There's a Facebook group for foreigners living here that's pretty active. Search for "Away from Home In Iceland" or something like that. You'll find a lot more people there than on here. Read More

Is the immigration office always so difficult? by GuestPoster242

I was just wondering if its a common thing for the Icelandic Immigration offices to toy around with people? Taking them weeks to respond to emails along the process. Losing Official documents from a complete packet and then requesting new ones, ...

In a word, "yes". :) They're pretty famous for it among the other foreigners I know. The last time I was in there, there was only one other customer in the office, and he was already being helped by one of the three employees. Unfortunately, I ... Read More

Taking online classes- books shipping costs? by GuestPoster242

Hi everyone, I'm nearing my move to Reykjavik at the end of this month. During my 1.5-2 yr stay I will be a full time undergraduate student online. My question is what would be the most cost effective way to get my course books while living in ...

deong

There might be good local options for a few, but amazon will ship books here in the worst case. Shipping is something like $10-15 plus about $5 per book. I usually end up paying around another $5-10 in import taxes. It's a little pricey, but if you ... Read More

Cars? by Icefan

Are cars expensive to buy in Iceland? Is it cheaper to buy in the UK and then ship it over?

Cars are expensive, but only to the degree that pretty much everything is expensive here. Cars aren't *especially* expensive compared to anything else, as far as I can tell. Here is a Ford dealer here in Reykjavík where you can see prices on ... Read More

Typical education salaries in Iceland by DvaTvista

Hi, I've just been offered a job coaching in Iceland for 200,000 kr /mo. + flat. Is this reasonable for sports/coaching jobs. Also, how much can I expect after taxes? Will this be comfortable for living in Iceland and maybe saving a bit? Oh, and ...

Broadband internet is typically charged not by speed, but by the amount of foreign data you download. For DSL, prices on Vodafone range from about 4000 for a 10 GB cap to about 7500 for 140 GB. Or you can get a much faster fiber optic connection ... Read More

I've found no shortage of talkative Icelanders if you're willing to wait until they're a few beers into the evening. :) But I'm in a similar situation, so if you came all this way so you could hang out with another American, I'm usually around. Read More

Sourcing Accommodation in Iceland? by kit_in_london

It is a little tougher to find the sort of flat you're looking for (they tend to call them "luxury apartments" here as far as I can tell). Particularly if you're looking for something big enough for a family, the market is pretty thin. That said, ... Read More
