Why no Guttering?

Post new topic

I see quite a few houses in Bulgaria with a new roof but with no guttering, is this common practice or a cost cutting exercise?

Welcome to the expat.com forum!

I had not noticed the missing guttering. :-) I would say that guttering is a pretty standard feature. But if there's a decent overhang on the roof (so the water doesn't run down your walls), then I'd guess it's more plausible not to have it.

I'll check next time I visit, but my recollection is that our village house has gutters - and so do our neighbours' houses.

If you see it specifically with brand new roofs... maybe they finished the roof, but didn't do the guttering yet? :-)

Thanks for the reply Gwynn Reason I ask is I've just purchased a house near Elhovo that's been renovated and no guttering, looking on line at houses for sale I can see quite a few with new roofs but no guttering wondered why?, Think I'll get some fitted as the overhang isn't that large.

A lot of houses I've seen in the village my house is in have no guttering. Mine does, but only on the front, and it's rusted out anyway! The whole lot will get new guttering when the roof is replaced in spring.

Possibly the reason with village houses is like you say, expense. If the roof overhangs are wide enough to direct the water away from the house, they may not be needed. Plus guttering means one then needs somewhere for the water to go. If you have a septic tank, you don't want all that water going in there flooding the system. Most have a pipe that directs the water away from the house and onto the ground.

I intend to set up a couple of rainwater collection tanks as I don't have a well, my area is low rainfall and water supplies can be unreliable.

I have seen village houses where the guttering exists but the downpipe doesn't. They just extend the outlet onto the road :-)

Ours was the same...

It rains a lot less in Bulgaria than in drizzly old England. So that's a plus, if you're gutterless. :-) But I think you're right to get it done when you have time and a bit of spare cash.
