Registering for stays over 90 days

Post new topic

gemmeroni

Has anyone registered for a stay of over 90 days at their local police station? I have an Irish passport and read that, although I am permitted to stay in Greece, I should register at my local police station if I plan to stay over 90 days.

I went to the local police station and showed them my Canadian and Irish passports. The took a photocopy of both. The following day I received a call saying I would have no problem staying over 90 days due to my Irish passport. So all I have is a verbal "ok" but no paperwork.

I am concerned I may run into issues at the airport when I head back to Canada after staying just under 5 months, without any proof that I went to the police station to register.

If anyone has experience with this, it would be helpful to know if there is something formal I should be asking for.

Thanks

@gemmeroni Have you looked closely for a stamp in your passport?

gemmeroni

Hi Pam:

They didn't put anything in my passport. The just took a photocopy of both and handed them back to me.

Didn't ask for an address, etc. Seems to me that if you are supposed to register at your local police station, you'd need to provide some information beyond your passport. I assumed they would ask for my address, and contact phone number.

Pam Wilkinson

@gemmeroni  That is surprising. They may have flagged your passport in the system. Perhaps, go back and ask.

I found this:

You will need to apply for a Greece long-stay visa in order to remain here for more than three months unless you are a national of:

The European Union Member Countries

Iceland

Liechtenstein

Norway

Switzerland

On the other hand, if you are trying to apply for a Greece short-stay visa, you can check here whether you need one or not.

I reckon that’s why your Irish passport was said to be the one to use because you don’t need that visa with that passport.

gemmeroni

Yes - I've seen that information, too. I know that I am not required to obtain a visa or residency permit as an Irish citizen staying in Greece for more than 90 days. It's just registering at the local police station part that has me stumped. If I knew what information others had provided and if they received any paperwork, it would ease my worries about encountering an issue as I head back home, as I am required to enter Canada using my Canadian passport (Irish/Canadian dual citizens must use Canadian passport when entering Canada)

RickyRO

It won't be a problem for you, because the Canadian border police won't be interested in the length of your stay in Greece / Europe... all that matters is that your Canadian passport is valid.

In Greece, the police realized that you only want to be a tourist who "extends" his stay there for more than 3 months and then they didn't bother with "official papers". For what? If you had requested to be granted a "residence permit", OK, then it would have been a different situation and you would have been asked for supporting documents. But in the case of a tourist with an "accepted" passport (EU and a few other countries including Ireland) most of the time the police are not stressed at all.

I am from Romania (EU) and no one has ever asked me anything in Greece. How long I stayed or how many times I entered / left the country. No one, never! Practically, all Greeks (both the officials and the owners of hotels, taverns, etc.) are satisfied that tourists come there and spend money and no one is stressed about the documents. IF I wanted to buy a house in Greece, or IF ask for something/anything from the Greek government, then I would certainly need to obtain a residence permit. But as long as I am just a tourist there, there is no stress for anyone relating to papers!

@RickyRO EU citizens dont need a residents permit,if they remain in Greece longer than three months they need to go get a registration card,see information on line for that,I have a ten year permit as I am British and not an EU member.

gemmeroni

@concertina

This is what I read online also. I am not required to get a residency card as an EU citizen, but it does state that EU citizens have to visit the local police station to register if they plan on staying longer than 90 days.

I think it's just wise for me to head back to the police station and ask for clarification. I had posted the question here to see if any members had been through this situation and could tell me what information they provided at the police station in order to register, and what they received (if anything).

concertina

@gemmeroni It tells you on line the paper-work that they wont to see,your KEP office will advise you further and of course the police, sometimes they send you to a special police office for immigration services depending where you reside and availability of services.It nothing to stress about,just do as they say.

Irene Christine

@gemmeroni

Go to immigration not to the police. Police might not know. When you stay more than 90 days you have to register with the immigration office.

gemmeroni

The police station is the correct place. You are required to register in the Department of Aliens bureau in stations with a foreigners department (our station does). I did visit our local station again to register and was advised that, in my case, with no intention to stay long term and/or work, there was no need to go through the process to obtain a certificate of registration as I am leaving at the end of August. I simply need to show my Irish passport when departing next month.

KiwiAlek

I am a Greek citizen, but my wife is not and has a New Zealand passport and we want to go on holiday to Greece for 4 months. How can she get a visa for more than 90 days allowed on the Schengen visa.

Some say go to a police station when we are there, but airlines cautioned us that if we have ticket with a return date more than 90-days out we could have problems entering Greece.

Anybody has any experience with this?

Thanks Alec

ApprentiExpat

@KiwiAlek

Go to your closet Greek embassy/consulate to get a long term visa

KiwiAlek

@ApprentiExpat

Thanks. I have already tried that and told can only apply after entering Greece for that type of visa extension.

Anyone else have any experience?
