Multi-trip traveler's insurance for purposes of applying for a visa

Post new topic

Mr. Barley

I read a comment by a Canadian who as a new applicant, qualified for a 3 year pensioner's visa (M) using a health insurance policy that covers him when he is out of the country up to 40 days. I think this warrants further analysis by the expat community on this forum, particularly by me.

As for the health plan, under the Public Service Health Care Plan you are covered for medical emergencies up to $500,000 CAD, if you are outside your home province for the first 40 days. I provided a letter from the insurance plan confirming the coverage: repatriation, medavac, hospitalization.

I can see why an agent looking at that document could reasonably conclude that the applicant meets the requirements: the M visa doesn't require continuous presence in Colombia. All it requires is that the M visa holder not be away for more than 6 months at a time. So, in theory, an M visa holder can visit for 40 days at a time, 182 days apart, and be in total compliance. On the flip side, a stricter agent could say I need to show medical coverage for a three year continuous period. It's a crap shoot.

Here is the quote I received from an insurance provider I found via Google for a multi-trip traveler's policy that covers a full year, for multiple trips of up to 90 days.  While the aforementioned Canadian's policy is for the rest of his life. this policy is for a year, so I wouldn't expect a visa for more than a one-year period, although that would be at the discretion of the visa agent, apparently.

P.S. The name of the insurance company has been sanitized to show "XXX".  This insurance is not Peligro's traveler insurance which he got through his facilitator for around $900.
