moving to Romania

Robert Hall

I am a retired UK  citizen with a Romanian lady friend and I am seriously thinking of moving there. As the UK  is no longer a member of the EU  I can't find a suitable visa for a retired man, any advice please. Also I understand I would need to take out private medical insurance, is this expensive and what options do I have ? Would it help my visa application if we got married. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Insurance is not expensive at all and can purchased via brokers online.  Your lady friend should be able to help find this.

As for the visa, of course, getting married would make it easier....though marriage itself is not easy and shouldn't be rushed for the purposes of immigrating.

Thanks for your advice, we have been in a relationship for 5 years now but marriage is still a big step for us.

@Robert Hall If you are moving to Romania I would like to inform you that you are moving to one of the most if not the most senseless places on the planet. Most people seem to have no manners and have never even been taught what manners are. Not to say they arent and cant be nice people, they can be, but they are clueless when it comes to manners. When I think of Communist era food lines you can be on a food line in capitalist Romania every day of your life because they just dont care if you wait all day. Nobody is in a hurry, nobody thinks anyone is in a hurry. People dont talk to people they dont know on the street, but they are on the phone constantly and when they are on the phone they arent paying attention to what they are doing. They have the least caring attitude towards others I have ever seen and Ive been all over the world. Again its not that they are mean people its simply the fact of life for them and they know no better.  I could go on and on and on but if you were brought up in the west it will drive you bonkers very very quickly.

Hello,

Wow, Richard, you have a bad, very bad vision about Romanian people.

Not all the Romanians are like in your description.

Please, stop talking in this way about us.

I know its not ALL Romanians, but its enough to make me never come back again. Im tired of people not looking where they are going when they walk. It is seriously aggravating. You dont walk backwards in crowded areas, its rude! As I said maybe they just dont realize it, either way its dumb.

As if more than a few Americans (or any other nationality) don't do the same, especially texting and driving!  Please, stop generalizing a population of people.  If you couldn't adapt and fit into THEIR country and culture, you made the right choice to leave, but I suspect your attitude also had a role in your experience.

On my many visits to Bucharest I have been treated with kindness and courtesy by all, I was very surprised by your response and it is not the Romania I know.

In some sense i agree with Richard. That was my fisrt impression too with all the buraucracy which takes forever to get your papers , even as a european, and people do need a nodge to finally do what they’re paid for but as soon as you actually talk to them it’s not bad at all. All they want is a conversation and some acknowledgment they exist. What I noticed is that a lot of western europeans just walk past them as if they rule the world. the experience I have is that as soon as you talk to Romanians they'll do everything they can to help.   One more thing, the drivers are the most courteous of the whole of Europe. You give them way, they thank you by using their indicators and they easily will let you get out of a side street even in heavy traffic.  In short, I love these people and I have lived in 6 countries the past 2 decades.
