To what extent are the latest banking technologies being adopted and utilized in China? (contactless payments, phone-based payment systems, QR codes, etc.)

widely used. All the people I know in China now only use their phone (Alipay or Wechat) for all transactions.

Rarely will they use cash or bank card when phone payment is not possible.

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

advantages: Very convenient.

disadvantages: privacy? slow disparition of cash.

Are new payment methods emerging in China? Which ones, and what does it change in your daily life?

for individual payments, I guess phone payment will stay.

For business, there might be some innovations coming in particular with eRMB and possibly coupling with smart contracts-like devices.

What are the advantages of using local bank services versus an international online banking service as an expat?

International bank seems safer in China.

Generally small Chinese local banks are not as professionals

Big Chinese banks are very procedural but are reliable and can be efficient once the process has been done once.

Are there specific features in banking apps that you find particularly helpful as an expat in China?

Phone banking is useful but not always available for foreigners.

Phone apps for foreign exchanges seems not available to foreigners in some banks, but this is useful and can save a lot of time (at counter). Due to strict control policy in China, I am not sure this will ease.

Hope this helps!
