Buses are the best about £1.50 single adult ticket, need exact change tho, but better to get a day saver on lothian buses as you can use that ticket all day on there buses. {marooon coloured bus}
As for getting around the city center i.e siteseeing best transport is walking.
I use the bus every day.

Lothian Buses has been voted the best public transport copany in Britain, on and off, for years.

If coming to live here, best to get a monthly ticket, and just pay by direct debit each month. You get a bus card with your picture on it, so not transferable, and swipe it when you get on the bus. Works out to around £1.30 a day or so. Much better than a £3.50 daysaver.

Even if you are just here for a week, it is still worthwhile going into a lothian Buses shop (e.g. on Hanover Street, near the Princes Street junction, in the New Town) and buying a weekly ticket. Around £12 for 7 days.
