British expats in France: what do you think about voting from abroad?

Post new topic

Ameerah Arjanee

Hello everyone, I'm a content writer for Expat Magazine. We are looking for testimonies from British expats in France about the latest news (concerning voting from outside the UK). What is your opinion about the UK government's decision to allow 3 million British expats abroad to join the electoral register for 2024, as they strike down the previous rule that banned those who'd been abroad for +15 years from voting? For context:

Thank you so much in advance for sharing your opinion!

Have you registered to vote yet? All you need is:

✅ Passport (current or expired)

✅ National Insurance number

✅ Part of your last address in the UK

It takes 5 minutes to register and the process has been made very simple

To register, head to the government website:

Thank you for posting this - I didn't know that it had changed. I'm in California, but should get French citizenship by this summer.

I am a us citizen and am registered to vote. I would be outraged to be disenfranchised by politicians because I live abroad. Im frankly shocked that this has been the case for UK citizens.  I look forward to seeing the responses that you get.  My question isn't how do they feel about being "granted" the franchise, but how they tolerated being stripped of their vote.

@Sepharad It didn't seem unfair, given that I'd been out of the UK for 15 years. However, the UK doesn't have citizenship based taxation, which would change my position.

I still have to right to live and work in the UK, should they ever get their act together ..

Why would your absence for any period, deprive you of your franchise?  The Franchise is a right of citizenship, not a privilege. You should be able to exercize your right anywhere on the planet.  I guess we are spoilt in the US. We have an orgnization that does nothing but help Americans overseas to vote.
