Cost of living in Morocco in 2024

Post new topic

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

As every year, we invite you to share your experience regarding the cost of living in Morocco, and if possible, in the specific region or city where you live. This will help members who are planning to relocate in Morocco.

Here are some points to guide you; the idea is to provide average prices for each category:

When it comes to housing, what is the cost of renting or buying an apartment or house in Morocco?

How much do you pay for public transports such as buses, subways, trains, trams, or taxis?

Could you share the average monthly cost of your grocery shopping?

What is the cost of health insurance? How much does a medical consultation cost in Morocco?

What are the tuition fees for children?

What are the average monthly costs for electricity, gas, water, internet, and phone plans?

For leisure activities, how much does it cost monthly?

If there are other expenses you find relevant, please feel free to share them!

Thank you for your contribution.

@Cheryl When we first moved here five years ago i rented a flat in the narjis section of Fes. It was 3000dh per month which a 1000dh more than what I should have been paying. Realizing, because I am a foreigner I was charged more than a citizen. I did that for three months then purchasing my flat which in my opinion was nicely priced. My flat is three nice sized bedrooms, two bathrooms, a huge salon, a huge sitting area, kitchen, and balcony. I moved to the trek Ain Chkf area, which I found to be very quiet and easy. Yes, I own it, I don’t owe a bank or any person.

Now, as of 2023 the prices have gone up significantly since my purchase five years ago. I own my own vehicle that again I purchased five years ago brand new. Again, it was a great price.  Fortunately, I have medical insurance, but not through Morocco. If anything should arise medical I just pay whatever the cost is. For,  example my daughter needed braces, so where I am from it would have cost five thousand and up for her braces to completion. Here it was $1350 for everything, now I am hearing the price has risen to $2000 or more.

As far as education, I am homeschooling my child. I have not had too many expenditures with that. Utilities will depend on usage. I have found electricty is very expensive in Morocco. Water is very cheap and the cell phone bill is relatively inexpensive. I have internet and just cell phone, no house phone.

Again, food cost will depend on each persons individual tastes. We are simple people. When we first moved here we shopped in the neighborhood sooks and went to Marjane. I particularly do not like that store as it reminds me of Walmart. Now, we only shop neighborhood stores, sooks, or BIM. Most sooks are very cheap and neighborhood stores are more personal. We get to know them and they get to know us.

Everything that I committed on is comparable to US prices. Which is far more expensive and less natural. All the naturally fresh fruits,  vegetables, and meats we buy here are far less expensive than unhealthy genetically modified and processed foods from the US. If you want nice fresh fruit and vegetables it will cost seriously more than normal.

Prices here in Morocco have risen, yes, but not to extent I would complain. If I were to complain I would feel horrible as there are very cheap options.

Good Morning, I responded to your post yesterday, but for some reason it never posted. I will be moving to Fes within the year, Inchallah, and wondered where you get your insurance, if you don't mind sharing.

Also, if you have had to use it since moving to Morocco, were you satisfied with the company's responses/payments?

Many Thanks,

Jeff

Good morning, what type insurance are you referring to? Only insurance I carry is car and home. I usually pay my premiums in full at the time of renewal. There are factors to consider like type of car, horse power, etc. I don’t carry medical insurance from Morocco.

@Fayyatha This was awesome! I currently live in the Chicago area and am looking to eventually move to Morocco. I have my savings(401k) and pension from my job but still think I need a little more to retire out and maybe teach online english as a supplemental income.

When I was in Morocco last February I didn’t think it was expensive but I’m sure compared to wages it can be. I will have to sell two of my properties here in the states but do I have to live there first to purchase property?

I’m looking around casablanca or Essoauria…maybe investment property in Marrakech.

Fayyatha

@Lysa Drew No you do not live here already to buy property, but I would come and do your own research for whatever home you decide. I really living here and it is only expensive as you want it to be. I live very modest.

jeffrushka

@Fayyatha I guess I mis-read your post. I am referring to health insurance. I have been looking at international policies and they can be very expensive. Thanks anyway.

Fayyatha

@jeffrushka Yes I stated I have insurance, but not through Morocco. Also, if any medical arises I just pay cash.

This is very insightful. thank you!

I have been living in Casablanca Morocco for one year now. Moved from the USA. My wife and I renting an apartment which we’re  paying a monthly rent of $700 usd. It’s one-bedroom apartment in desirable neighborhoods. For those folks that reside in Casablanca: Is this normal —for an apartment in Casablanca?

Hqali0913

@Fayyatha if you dont mind asking, did you get insurance through a campany based in the US?

Hqali0913

@Hqali0913 never mind, just read your response above regarding the insurance

Fayyatha

@Hqali0913 which neighborhood is it and i can let you know. Also, remember for me this was five years ago. Prices have went up all over, but again i can ask. Every place is different, but you have to remember that because you’re american you will get charged more. The section of fes that i live in is very desirable. A builder tried to give me one price which i knew was too high for the area.

they thought i didn’t understand what they were saying because my speaking wasn’t very good. I understood everything they said and told them as such. this is how i figured they were not being sincere and raising the price because i am american. That is also how i found out in the old neighborhood i was being charge 1000dh more than native citizens. it basically comes to research and gut feelings.
