Bank Transfer Scrutiny

Post new topic

I want to transfer around $20k to my wife's Timo(viet capital) or VIB account anyone have recent experience with this?

Mostly I am wandering what happens on the vietnam bank end. Is there going to be any issues or problems, explanations of the money or charges?

Thanks!

I made some transfers to a bank in Vietnam, the problem is that if you make a transfer in $, the Vietnamese bank charges fees to convert into VND. If the bank accepts, you must make a transfer in VND.

The other solution is to check with the Vietnamese community around you, some are very happy to transfer the money they have in Vietnam to your wife and you make the transfer to the person near you. No fees and the change of the official of the day. You just have to be in front of each other.

Transfer from a Canadian bank to Vietnam or Vietnam bank to Vietnam bank?

I have used Transferwise, (now Wise) many times.  I have sent over $100K USD.  They do have a $10K USD limit per transfer.  I had to break one transfer into five separate $10k transfers and one into four and a couple of $5K transfers.  It works well and the fees are as low as you are likely to find and everything showed up in her Vietnamese account in VND in a day or two.

@SteinNebraskaDid you transfer USD directly to a foreign currency account at a Vietnamese bank? If yes, it is possible to withdraw USD in cash from that foreign currency account at that Vietnamese bank?

With 5 usd your wife open account in Vietcombank.

Send the USD on the number of wife's account, tax charged for your wife, one mounth later she can receive USD from his dollars account without any tax.

If your wife want widraw fast, my be she get VND and the change isnt so well.

Pippocalo761953

@James Liu One mounth later the money was come in Hanoi.

One mounth later without a very small fee for the transfert charged for people receiving money in VN.

The tax for the transfert payed oversea are a lot more expensive.

Just must to wait one mounth before widraw.

It is better to use VIETCOMBANK.

But I think Agribank, Vietinbank and BIDV.....are nearly the same.

@James Liu Thanks, I actually do not need to withdraw USD. It is only for use in VND.

@Pippocalo761953 I did see on YT video that Vietcom was best for expats and international transaction. I have an account at HSBC but had some problems with them and just don't trust them. In a month or so we will add Vietcom account. I need to pay the fees and apply the Matrimonial Exemption beforehand.

@SteinNebraska thanks for that, I was considering using Wise as they tell you exactly how much you should receive. Maybe their 10k limit is to prevent scrutiny. Do you find that there are any taxes due or your wifes bank asking questions about the source of the money?

No, it was USD directly to a Vietnamese account but it arrived there in VND.  Wise has favorable exchange rates and actually transfers at the mid-day exchange rate.

No taxes and no questions whatsoever.  And yes,the exact amount is what showed up in her account.

Reading this thread , I had account 6 years ago in HCMC , and it is still there , I think but inactiive yet I could not verify as call person at bank spoke no English .

My friend in Saigon a married man said to not move too much at a time , his US Bank is HSBC ...  anyhow ;  I would like to live in iether Japan or Vietnam. I do hope that with an investment visa .. I could avoid the " border run " every ?? 3 months ??   I had 3 month visa's in 2017 consecutively , that was bearable.

Maybe only the 30 day visa now .

I have been back in US too long. Food and social stress here is killing me 😆 .... My bank was the IMPORT/ EXPORT Bank EXIM BANK , do they still operate in Vietnam ?

Hi all. My take : any foreign currency into Vietnamese banks most welcome. But strictly not the other way round...

Aidan in HCMC

Maybe only the 30 day visa now .

90 day tourist eVisas are now available, with some members/agencies reporting a recent development wherein an application for a new 90 day eVisa had to be made from outside of Vietnam.

That said, I've received correspondence from a member who, just days ago, applied from within Vietnam and was approved. His initial application was denied, the denial stating that the eVisa was for "foreigners outside of Vietnam" (as it has always said, though now it is apparently sometimes being interpreted differently). The member then amended the application to indicate an entry date one day after the final date of their currently valid eVisa, and was approved. This must at this point be taken as an anecdotal account, as the member did not wish to post directly to the forum fearing attracting the attention of authorities. I've asked them to post the details when they feel comfortable. Ofcourse,it's important to remember that YMMV!

Understandable by all, I'm sure.

(Link), though I've not seen nor heard of them before.

, showing the bank to be open, closing at 5:00PM.

@mitsmaak

there is no tax to pay.open an account with $5 with an account number and transfer the money from where you live in dollars, or in euros as you prefer to the bank on the name of that account and the number of that account. If you withdraw immediately, you have to withdraw VND and forex is what Vietcombank will do to you at that time (slightlydisadvantageous).if you wait 30 days, you will withdraw USD without any taxation.

Remember: travel expenses are the responsibility of the beneficiary.

In VN bringing money in is very easy, taking it out IMPOSSIBLE.

I thought there was a monthly limit you can send per month. I thought it was around $3K per month the last time I sent anything with Transferwise before they became Wise. This was back in maybe 2019. So there's no monthly limit but the only limit is $10K per transfer?

UPDATE:

Hey All, Thanks for all of your thoughtful replies. I made a Wise account. I deposited into the Wise account. I did a test of $1k. It worked out pretty well. Wise estimated that the funds would be available in the Wise account in 6 hours. My bank processed the transfer in about an hour. And verified that the funds were delivered to Wise. Wise then took an additional 2 hours to process receipt. There were no fees from my bank to Wise and they did not charge to receive funds. After that I did $100 test transfers to VIB, Viet Capital (Timo), and Westpac NZ accounts. The money was credited and available in all accounts in about 2 hours. The Wise fees were $2.22 to vietnam and $0.94 to NZ. When I sent larger amounts to VND, the fee was lower as a percentage of the total.
