Type O Visa insurance VS Bank Deposit?

Post new topic

Paul_Adams

I've read a lot about this with no clear understanding.  The O requires insurance.  Does a significant deposit in a Thai bank account (or USA) allow you to skip the insurance requirement.?

I have two trips to upcoming trips to Thailand to make arrangements and I would like to get this ball rolling while I am there.

Has anyone had actual experience in recent years regarding this?

@Paul_Adams

No, a deposit would not be accepted as  a replacement if the health insurance is a prerequisite.

Any short term insurance will do from an insurance company in Thaiand. They even have specific arrangements for visa applications.

As far as I know the O visa does not require a health insurance, the O-A does however.

@JonSt

I have read that before in application stories, but I also read different stories. It can depend somewhat on the embassy and how they apply the ' rules'

After researching a bit and my GF picking up documents at the local immigration office, there is a clear difference between the Thai website and what the documents say is required.  There is no mention of insurance on the documents from the local immigration office. Non-O

As someone else mentioned, it seems to be a difference if you apply for a visa outside of Thailand versus if you already have a visa and want to apply for a different visa TM86 vs. TM87.  If already in Thailand with a Visa, the insurance requirement does not seem to apply.  Others, please correct me if this is inaccurate.

martinoo2002

Correct

That is THE difference between application outside vs inside. No need for health insurance when you extend in Thailand

I am on the Non Type O visa and have been through three yearly extensions and all of the 90 day address verification procedures. I've never been asked about health insurance.

@rzugnoni

The health insurance added to the Non O application outsole Thaland was added during Covid period. It seems you acquired Non O before that requirement..

I came over in the middle of the pandemic. I came over on a flight that was meant for Thai nationals and for people that are related to Thai nationals which in my case was my wife. At that time I had to show travelers insurance that included coverage for COVID 19, do the 15 day quarantine, etc. I was covered for my 1st 90 days. I then applied for the one year extension. I was not asked about health insurance when I did that.

@JonSt correct

Only the selling insurance company will tell you its required thai imgration will not even look at it although the online e visa application requests it, i never have been ask for it at imigration i have a non o visa extended 1 year

I came during the pandemic and quarantine in bangkok for ten days. I had bought insurance, but apparently it wasn't enough, and it was a nightmare getting through customs after flying about 25 hours. Customs found me some really crummy insurance just enough to get me in country

martinoo2002

@rzugnoni

So you were asked for a health insurance when you initially entered, that was my point and that is more or less what we are discussing

When doing an extension in Thailand normally there is no need for a health insurance, that is correct

martinoo2002

I also have never been asked for a health insurance for 25 years, it was only due to Covid in the 2020's people who applied OUTSIDE of Thailand had to show they were insured properly.

Not sure if that is still the case

Insurance companies will always tell you  will need it, just as the bank will tell you the need for a life or risk insurance...... upselling that is called, hahaha
