Crafting in Ireland

Post new topic

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Discovering and participating in the artisan culture  in Ireland  is an opportunity not only to enrich your personal knowledge, but also to forge authentic connections with the locals. More than just a hobby, it is a gateway to integration and a deep understanding of the traditions that shape the cultural identity of Ireland, making your own experience more meaningful.

What opportunities are available for residents to participate in workshops or training in Ireland? Are there any places or occasions to learn or practice local crafts?

What craft practice have you had the opportunity to try or would you like to try? What were your impressions?

How has discovering and participating in the local artisan traditions enriched your experience as an expat?

What challenges have you faced in trying to get involved in the artisanal culture of your host country? How have local artisans welcomed your interest in their traditional crafts?

What advice would you give to expats who want to explore craft culture in Ireland ?

If you have any other relevant information on the local artisan culture, please feel free to share it.

Thank you for your contribution.

Hi ,

I arrived in Ireland as a knitter in 2007 naively thinking that the woool here would be of better quality thatn the one I was used to in  France. However, I was to be soon bitterly disappointed, so many sheep and so little good wool and none Irish!!! I decided to look for a way of meeting like minded people and founded with three other ladies a knitting club in my town, it was lovely and soon I had made lovely local friends but still something was misssing , so I decided to learn to spin took a workshop and bought my first wheel..from there it snowballed , I created a craft club to were people could meet and learn  ancient skills like spinning and weaving...we are now 20 meeting every week and enjoying some cafty quality time together and I have finally met my tribe! Coupled with the lovley knitting group created years ago , I now feel fully integrated and my life in Portarlington surrounded by crafty people is very rich in life experiences and full of love and happiness thanks to all my Irisnh and non Irish friends! So do not hesitete, create if it is not there!!!
