I live near Asenovgrad. The veterinary clinic here is excellent. Three young guys are the partners, they speak fluent English and have demonstrated a high degree of competence and compassion.

And far less expensive than their UK equivalents!

Our experiences have been positive ones too. You don't need an appointment, ( unless of course you are planning a  neutering etc) you just turn up & wait ( never for very long )

All the vets in the practice speak fluent English and are professional & friendly. And pricing is very reasonable.

There are no breed restrictions here and plenty of people keep "Pitbulls", although many of them look a lot more like Staffies or crosses to me (I had a Staffie/Great Dane cross years ago ). Just follow the usual rules - often ignored but not a good idea to do so.

Be careful, there are ticks galore!

I've had several houses in France - the ticks here are worse. I'd also strongly suggest not gardening in shorts; there's nothing worse than prising ticks from the family jewels - don't ask me how I know....

@JimJ Sounds fun,we are used to tic tweezers and the dogs are on nexguard, We're thinking of retiring to Bulgaria in the next couple of years.

Not a bad choice: it's cheaper than France - or at least it was; I haven't been in France for about ten years now, so I don't know what prices are like nowadays. It's getting more expensive here every week: I gauge prices by my supermarket bill; when I lived in France, whenever I went shopping and whatever I bought, the bill was always around 100 francs. Here it's been around 100 leva for the last few years but nowadays it's at least 20% more than last year and increasing steadily. As you'll have read on this forum, property prices have increased dramatically; it might be another bubble like we had 10 years or so ago, when they rocketed and then slumped. However, they've more than caught up again now and it's quite a gamble deciding which way the pendulum will swing.

Bureaucracy is much less than in France - and even more so than in Greece, which is definitely the European champion in that sport. You will find it something of a culture shock after France, unless you've had prior experience in the Balkans. There are several foreign enclaves, if that's your bag (it's decidedly not mine ) and, as in France (and elsewhere), the vast majority seem pretty unconcerned about learning the local language properly. To be fair, the older one gets, the harder it is - and Brits in general have always been notoriously bad at foreign languages, for some reason. Perhaps we can blame Peter Mayle....

@JimJ We have visited Bulgaria about 10 years ago, I visited with my Mam and Dad about 50 years ago I didn't think that the villages had changed much, the people were very poor but friendly. France as you have said is a burecratic nightmare and getting worse the prices in the UK are still going up and up as is France, we would rather be in a Bulgarian town learning a new language will be fun ,no British enclaves we lived in Brittany which was beautiful but full of Brits ,we will sell our house in France to fund our house in Bulgaria I fancy one near Turkey and Greece.

We moved from France about 4 years ago and dont regret it one bit. Much nicer people here and much easier to get sorted with documentation etc 

We are close to Svilengrad which has everything that you would need. There are several vets in town so no issue bringing your dogs.

Not many expats in this area. Most villages have one or two and not just brits.

The only downside is the extreme heat in summer but that means milder winters so not all bad.
