Auto Insurance when traveling

Post new topic

Right up front - very sincere thanks to anyone responding to this post.  Good information is greatly appreciated.

I've currently been living in Portugal for 3 years and renting a car has been difficult when traveling back to the US.  I have no need for a vehicle here and as a result, have no auto insurance.  So when I rent in the States, the insurance charges are nothing less than outrageous.

Has anyone found short term insurance plans or a legal way to circumvent this issue?

If you are renting for less than 31 days, you should check with the coverage your credit card provides.

Check your credit cards, if you have any. Especially American Express - if you rent a car with them, they often include car rental insurance.
