Inquiry about how to make contact with someone in Vung Tau

Post new topic

quigleyontop

Please excuse my approach, I am new expat.com.  I would like to appeal to someone who may reside near the Vung Tau Airport for the purpose of communication concerning the condition of the property that used to facilitate the old U.S. Army 36th Evacuation Hospital which was located near the airport.  I was stationed there in 1968 and now curious about the location and what I have seen on Google Earth images.  It appears that there may be a number of shipping containers located where the footprint of the hospital was. I think I actually see the sidewalks that were there used for the transportation of patients and the delivery of hospital supplies to the wards, etc..  If it's not asking too much, I would sure love to see some photos of that area.  Kind Regards and Thank You.

As I mentioned in response to your previous post, my friend who lives in Vũng Tàu is willing to attempt get some photos of the area. We're not sure if photography is allowed within the vicinity of the airport though.

You mentioned that you have names of the cross streets where the hospital was located. If you could share those and any other info that might pinpoint the location, that would help a lot. He could then check it out when he has some free time soon.

Exactly the main problem.

Many, many sites previously occupied by foreign military forces are either totally off limits or have very restricted access.

I believe most Vietnamese citizens would be afraid to attempt this action for fear of somehow being charged with providing restricted information to a foreigner.

Any expat who attempts to help you with this inquiry should definitely double check with the local police before wandering around and photographing a potentially sensitive area.

There have been many, many posts in this forum complaining that the government here is not very supportive of foreign military reunions or commemorations here.

No reason they should be.

Good luck!

I concur on all of that.  I appreciate your effort.  The physical location of The 36th Evacuation Hospital is the corner streets of Hem 64 and Nguyen Hoi.  A part of my heart was left behind in Vung Tau.  Thanks Again.  Much Love.

Sorry I missed your first post to me, I'm still getting used to how to operate here at this site.

That location is in a residential area on the opposite side of the main road across from the airport so it should be accessible. I'll send this info to my buddy there in VT.

Maybe I can put you guys in touch with each other if he comes up with something but we'll need to exchange contact info by private message rather than publicly here on the forum.

In the meantime, there's an interesting page on Facebook called "Sunny Saigon" that posts a lot of photos from that era including some from Vung Tau.

To more clearly identify the location of The 36th Evacuation Hospital, located on Hem 64, Vung Tau, there is an  open, 6-8 feet wide, concrete water conduit/ditch which runs the full length of Hem 64.  The hospital was located on the airport side of that ditch.  On the other side of the ditch was Hem 64. I wonder to this day if all of the hospital is stored in those, what looks like, shipping containers located on the grounds according to Google Earth images.  Thanks Again.

@jayrozzetti23

I just posted this on expat as well.  To make it more clear where the 36th Evacuation Hospital was located, it was on Hem 64, Vung Tau.  There is a 6-8 foot wide open concrete water drainage ditch that runs the length of Hem 64.  The hospital was located between this ditch and the airport.  I wonder to this day if the hospital is stored in, what appears to be, those shipping containers that appear on Google Earth.  You may recall that evacuation was very quick.  Thanks Again.

Please don't allow your valid inquiry to morph into a "war story".

How can I supply you with my private contact information, you may already have it as I enclosed it in a public forum message I sent to you almost a week ago.  I'm trying to understand the mechanics of operating on the forum. I did establish you as a contact, but that's not your private information.  I don't want to step on anybody's toes, the bad dancer that I am. Thanks Again.

@jayrozzetti

Jay: I just realized I'm communicating with two different people, you and Oceanbeach.  I would love for you to contact your buddy in Vung Tau to see what can be done.  How do I get my personal information to you?

I think I finally got it done, Jay. Thanks for the tips on how to get to private conversation.

AW: Yes, true, yet I'd say that except for a few, which now serve Vietnamese MoD related purposes, loke the Bien Hoa or Phan Rang (former USAF & ARVN) air bases, or Cam Ranh port, more often than not, if they didn't get bulldozed, most got reused and their history simply forgotten at some point. Until recently, they didn't if bother removing the old hangers at TSN SGN International Airport. The same is the case with Cam Ranh, Da Nang, Hue, Chu Lai and so on, even guard towers and bunkers with gun ports are still there to see as you taxi down to the gate! You just need to know where and what to look for!

I believe most Vietnamese citizens would be afraid to attempt this action for fear of somehow being charged with providing restricted information to a foreigner.

AW: That used to be the case, but no longer as that generation who knew why to be scared is now the minority, while the generations of the majority have no clue why they should have any reason to be worried. How could they?! Nobody ever explained or told them about "that history". They couldn't care less and probably be happy to fly their drone up and down, to video record the entire area from above for you!

But I agree, not a smart idea to seek, let alone proovide sensitive material!

Any expat who attempts to help you with this inquiry should definitely double check with the local police before wandering around and photographing a potentially sensitive area.

AW: That is certainly only going to result with a NO! VT airport is NOT a secret military facility, taking photos might result in a case where they come and demand to stop and go away, worst case, have your pics deleted.

There have been many, many posts in this forum complaining that the government here is not very supportive of foreign military reunions or commemorations here.

AW: 50yrs on, I personally find it rather odd to make such a drama when a few hundred, gray haired old gents with their families return, be it for closure or what ever.

The last "event" was rather a poor demonstration of the will or ability to deal with history, simply because they saw how many Aussie blokes began gathering in the watering holes of Saigon and Vung Tau, before they were about to be off in direction to Long Tan's Nui Dat hill for the 50th anniversary.

Good luck!

Noted mate, hit the quote button, but seems I need to get my head around it a bit more and how things get done the right way here these days.

I was more focused on the subject.
