Mobile phone plans in Cambodia

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Staying connected while living in Cambodia remains a priority for expats, especially when choosing a mobile operator or to understand the local specificities of mobile plans.

Here some elements to consider:

How to choose your mobile operator in Cambodia?

What documents are required to subscribe to a mobile plan in Cambodia?

What criteria should you consider when choosing a plan matching your needs?

Are e-sim cards a suitable option for expats? What are the conditions?

What are your local tips for saving money on your mobile plan, especially for international calls (apps, operators, etc.) or mobile data?

Feel free to share your experiences and advice to choose your mobile plan as an expat in Cambodia.

Thank you for your contribution.

@Cheryl hi Cheryl. I think the best thing for me was getting a Smart cell service sim card when I got back in 2022. Then I went to a Smart Store and upgraded the service to a monthly plan. I get 50gb of data and lots of talk and sms with smart customers. Important to note there are three different providers. I pay $6 a month for my plan. It renews automatically as long as I have a balance. I just topup the service each month using ABA bank. We also have home wifi with them.  I have mixed feelings about the wifi. It could work better. If it were just me and my MacBook and android phone I would hotspot the phone.

To me the 50gb of 4g data is unlimited. I never use it all. I also use their android app to track the cell service and topup. Easy stuff.

I've also been using Smart for over a year on the same package, which is called Smart Laor! 6. My experience has been similar. The monthly data is more than I can use even streaming music all day, never using public wifi at coffee shops and restaurants, and using my phone as a hotspot when I'm on my laptop outside..

As Miles mentions, topping up your balance from the ABA Bank app is very convenient, just a few clicks on the phone once a month.

The other service providers are Cellcard and Metfone. I have seen several people mention that Metfone's coverage is more extensive than Smart and thus, may be better if you're living in a rural area.

Regarding the documents required, you have to register via the Smart app and create a profile that includes your full name, date of birth, gender, and passport number. I think that's it

Anyway, this is another area where Cambodia has significantly improved compared to my experience a decade ago.
