Good evening BRIGHTAKOTUAH,

Thank you for creating this topic. Yes, it’s possible that your CV needs to be changed to fit the Luxembourgish standards. I’ll reach out to a nurse friend of mine to see if she has any specific advice for the healthcare sector, and I’ll let you know as soon as I hear back from her.

In the meantime, here are some general tips regarding CV expectations in Luxembourg:

  • CV Length: Your CV should not exceed two pages, and if you can fit it onto one page, that’s even better!

  • Prioritize Professional Experience: In Luxembourg, professional experience often holds more weight than academic qualifications. I suggest placing your work experiences at the top of your CV. Be sure to clearly indicate the number of months or years you spent in each role. That said, since you’re applying for a healthcare position, it might be better to lead with your qualifications. The goal is for employers to see within 10 seconds that you’re qualified for the job you’re applying for, whether through your qualifications, experience, or both. Highlight whichever aspect is most relevant, depending on your situation and the job you’re applying for. Also, it’s standard practice in Luxembourg to start your CV with a “My Profile” section that summarizes your background, why you’re qualified, and what you have to offer. Generally, this section is about 5-6 lines long, with important keywords in bold. If you don’t have this section on your CV, I suggest you add it.

  • Tailor Your CV to Each Job Application: For every application, at least change the title of your CV and rearrange your work experiences or qualifications so that the most relevant ones comes first. Again, the idea is for recruiters to quickly see that you’re a good match for the position. If none of your work experiences directly relate to the job, emphasize transferable skills that are relevant to the role (e.g., “empathy,” “active listening” etc).

  • Languages: Language skills are very important in Luxembourg. French, German, and Luxembourgish are the country’s official languages, and English is often an added advantage. Any other language can also be a significant asset in your application. I recommend clearly highlighting all the languages you speak, including your native language, and the ones you might be currently learning (or ready to learn) and indicating your proficiency level for each (A1, A2, B1, B2, etc.). Adding that you are willing to learn any langages that might be useful for the job is also a good idea.

Here are some additional tips for your cover letter, which you can also include in the body of your application email:

  • Emphasize your motivation to move to Luxembourg: clearly explain why you want to move to Luxembourg. Focus on the fact that you are looking for a long-term job and that you plan to settle in Luxembourg for the long term.

  • Demonstrate Long-Term Commitment: Companies in Luxembourg face recruitment challenges because there are more open positions than candidates. One of the major issues is that many people take a job and then leave after a few weeks or months. By showing that you are seeking a stable, long-term position, you increase your chances of being hired.

Is this helping? Does your CV already include all of this, or are there some details from what I listed that you can apply?

Hi @BRIGHTAKOTUAH,

My nurse friend got back to me. She said there isn’t anything specifically different for the healthcare sector, but she did share a few tips.

First, she confirmed the importance of having a “My Profile” section at the beginning of your CV to briefly explain your background and skills. Then, she strongly recommends describing the tasks you’ve performed in each job, especially if you’re applying for positions that are different from what you’ve done so far.

For example, she said someone who has worked only in hospitals and is applying for a job in a hospital or clinic can simply list their experiences. However, someone who worked as a nurse in a private company and wants to apply to a hospital should detail their job in the company to show the relevance to the new job and demonstrate that they haven’t lost any key skills.

Lastly, she mentioned that she found her job through the website and set up alerts to ensure she didn’t miss any opportunities that matched her profile.

Do these tips help you with your CV?
