Preventive care in Mexico

Post new topic

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

As an expat in Mexico, taking care of your health would be one of your main priorities. Preventive healthcare plays a crucial role in keeping fit and healthy. We therefore would like to invite you to share your insights on preventive care in Mexico, so as to best take care or your health as an expat and navigate the local healthcare system.

Here are a few questions to start with:

What preventive care plans and measures are available in Mexico?

Can expats easily access preventive healthcare services?

Does health insurance cover preventive care in Mexico or is there any other scheme available? Any tips to choose the right plan?

How to get informed about preventive care plans or events: any useful website, hotline, or media that you’ve found helpful?

What is the local attitude towards preventive care and how did you adjust to it?

Share your experiences and tips to help fellow expats.

Thank you for your contribution.

Here in Jalisco we have Salud Jalisco which is free preventative healthcare at government clinics in the state of Jalisco.  We recently signed up very easily - we simply needed to be over 65 and have copies of our passport, residence permit, CURP and a utility bill to show our address.

As soon as we signed up we got a free flu shot and the next week we went back for a free pneumonia shot and tetanus shot.  They gave us a sort of health passport which records shots and preventative healthcare visits etc.

For most matters we simply self-insure and go to a local doctor but we know that we can use the government hospitals for catastrophic care etc. at little to no cost.
