I flew hcmc to Paris with air france took my slightly larger than parlour in the cabin for free after discussion with the flight crew. But can be 250 euros

in my experience with various airlines, it has always been up to the cabin attendants, because they can only accommodate so many special requests before they run out of room which can be taken up with myriad other carry on items.

so it's usually not something that can be approved in advance.

it's a good idea not to have it in a soft case just in case you are told that your guitar has to be gate checked.

Im gracious for the responses. Is it possible to rent a guitar in HMC for my duration. I鈥檓 looking for most affordable option as I don鈥檛 want to lose a Martin that鈥檚 mighty special to me.

I am not aware of any guitar rental services here. That doesn't mean they don't exist I just don't know of any.

I have a spare guitar you can rent if you wish but you might find buying suits you better. The guitar I can rent you cost ne 5 million VND so around 200euros to buy. The other Vietnamese guitar I bought from the same Luthier cost me 500 euros and is top quality this I took back to Paris

In 6 years I've done business with guitar shops in H脿 N峄檌, 膼脿 N岷祅g, Qui Nh啤n & HCMC.

Two times I was actually looking into the option of renting something temporarily, but nothing like that was available.

I was able to borrow a guitar , but only because a few weeks of networking had helped me cross paths with a friendly Brit expat.

You should be able to find an Epiphone made in China for about 鈧�3 million 膽峄搉g ($120 USD) without a case.

Even better deals on used guitars.

It's also possible to buy a guitar and sell it back before you leave for a significant discount, depending upon how well you take care of it.

I have brought an OM size guitar from Ireland to Hanoi in a soft case and used it as my hand luggage with no problems. Now maybe I was just lucky, if they insist that you check it as luggage then you have a problem, it's impossible to predict what can happen, there are too many variables.

I did one international flight like this, not sure if it only applies to fights to-from the US?

I'm sure there are limitations on instrument size but it covers guitars.

But did Obama prevent airlines charging you 鈧�250 for the privilege? I can buy a guitar here for less than that. Not sure how Obama can pass laws on non American airlines either?

I think that law only applies to domestic flights. The rules applied to boarding an international flight change all the time, it's always risky carrying a guitar and quoting Obama in SE Asia is unlikely to be helpful.

Exactly; a domestic USA regulation only.

It's a Department of Transportation rule issued March 6, 2015聽 to implement section 403 of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 regarding the carriage of musical instruments as carry-on baggage or checked baggage on commercial passenger flights.

Quoting from that rule it says EXACTLY what I mentioned previously:

Section 403 of the Act and this final rule provide that carriers are required to allow passengers to stow their musical instruments in an approved stowage area in the cabin only if at the time the passenger boards the aircraft such stowage space is available

Smaller instruments that will fit under a seat or in the same space limit for a piece of carry on luggage can be brought into the main cabin under the limits for pieces of carry-on luggage, not as an additional piece.

On聽 most airlines, if you fly first class you are allowed 2 pieces of carry-on luggage.

That's all well and good, but I can't see how it applies outside the USA.
