Can I still collect my Social Security benefits if I reside in Portugal? If so, what are the tax ramifications? - @edwyer729

Hi and Welcome.

Shirley the first question is  best answered by whoever supplies your Social Security Benefits ?

I am assuming you meant the US, here is some guidance from USA.gov.

No idea about taxes.

It is my understanding that your US SS would be taxable at the rate of 10% in Portugal, it is classed as a pension and pension payments are taxable in Portugal even if you've paid tax on them in the US but it is a bit of a grey area. If you have abandoned the US and do not pay US taxes you'd only pay the 10% tax. However absolutely best to contact a professional as everyone's circumstances are different.

What about income from us investnents.   Are those taxed

Mariza.says

When you become a resident of Portugal (through your residency visa) you also become a taxpayer of Portugal.

You are required by portuguese law to declare all your annual income, earned anywhere in the world, to the portuguese tax authorities (Finanças) and you'll be taxed according to portuguese tax laws, for the period you remain resident in Portugal.

Pension income has a flat tax rate of 10%.

Other sources of income have different taxe rates, some might be exempt.

When a tax in Portugal is higher than the same tax in the home country, Portugal may charge the difference, say between 20% and 25%.

Better consult a portuguese accountant experienced in international tax.

Unfortunately the US will also keep taxing all US citizens, even when they are residents outside the US. It's the only country that does this.
