Rental agents

Post new topic

Hello.

On 8th January I put a deposit on an apartment.

There were some issues that needed to be fixed and was assured by the rental agent that all would be okay by moving in date on 17 th.

On 16th when I moved some of my bigger stuff in things still had not been fixed .

i again complained to the agent that none of the three tvs were working.

The door to the outside balcony doesn’t shut properly and some other minor things I have fixed.

The apartment is ideal for my family  the landlady is great.

The problem is she doesn’t understand English and I don’t speak Khmer.

Hence the reason everyday I contact the agent who organised everything asking him to come and help resolve the issue I still have.

He now totally ignores my messages and calls.

Does anyone know of any agency or organisation that can provide assistance to me in this matter?

Thank you for taking the time to read my query.

Hi. Definitely understand. Just a few things perhaps. If you can find a Khmer person that can explain to landlady that would help. Second thing is take photos of things broken. Write some basic sentences what each is and I bet Google translate could come close. Our landlord speaks no English either but my partner is Khmer so she deals with that stuff. For finding a Khmer person suggest you look around your apartment complex. When we had an apartment few years ago , our Khmer neighbor helped a few times. She understood English and could translate to Khmer. She could also show the photos.

I don't know if some agency besides going to the rental agency in person. Ask to speak to the agent face to face if you can. Or ask to see the office manager. Hopefully the office is in SR. It's harder to ignore someone when they're standing in front of you asking for help I think.

Just some ideas. I'm lucky because my partner deals with stuff involving interactions like that. Actually perhaps with most interactions with Cambodian people.

Fact is that agents get the deposit you pay before moving in, so this agent is not interested anymore.

As has been suggested find a Khmer person that speaks English and talk directly to the landlady.

Google translate is a great help. Just use the reverse translate function so you know the translation is correct.

Always better to communicate directly with the landlady as she has to manage repairs or improvements.

Good luck!

Thank you for your responses.

The son speaks some English and I go down every morning and he keeps telling me someone will be here to fix the problems but as usual no one turns up.

Have just spoken to him again and he translated to his mother.Again said someone would be here today.

See what happens.

Think I will go into Khmer Housing office as suggested.

aThanks again
