Car Buying Requirements

Post new topic

Hello to everyone that reads this post.

I want to buy a used car on Koh Samui. I have no idea what documentation proof or insurances I need to provide the prospective seller. Can anyone please give advice?

Thank you in advance. I'm totally confused. Any advice is gratefully received.

Thank you,

Lindsay

If you have the cash it is quite simple.

You go with the seller to the land and transportation office and the name gets changed in the green(?) owners book. The car gets a small check up at the LTO. You give the seller the cash, you get the book.

Be sure the car is insured for the 1-2 days get the insurance done before you purchase the car, tell your insurance people the issue you are dealing with, cannot be their first time

Do I need to prove residency, have more than a tourist visa?

We bought a used car and as Martin explained we just went to the Transportation office with the vendors, they give it a very quick inspection, changed the book over to our ownership and in the same building we paid the insurance for a year. All done in less than an hourðŸ‘ðŸ»

If you are buying used though, find a decent local mechanic to check it over. On the car we bought the brake pads were worn out and the previous owner mentioned that there was a slight issue with the automatic gearbox with the car juddering when pulling away, turned out that there was no automatic transmission fluid in it😂filled it up and car runs great!
