International Fiction (novels)

Having spent most of my life in various foreign countries,I love to read about life in other countries, especially from the expat point of view.  There are many non-fiction stories out there, the most famous ones the Provence books by Peter Mayle and the Tuscany books by Frances Mayes.

However, I'd like to find some expat FICTION and it's not something you can search for on Amazon.

One novel I read, Rules of the Wild by Francesca Marcicano, was about expat life in Nairobi, Kenya.

Does anyone know of other expat novels? Contemprorary, not historical. I'd love to find something interesting to read!

Oh my, how I absolutely hated Rules of the Wild !!!

And I loved the "Merde" series by Stephen Clarke, A Year in the Merde and Merde Actually, or how a Britishman survives in France. The next two novels, I haven't read yet, so I can't say. But I laughed a lot.

But I must confess, I haven't found expat novels either... :-/

Thank you!  Actually, I remember seeing these.  I thought they were non-fiction.  Rules of the Wild:  There was certainly much not to admire about the lifestyle described!

I'm looking forward to the Merde books -- laughing is good! I can always use some.

Any more expat novels, anyone?

'The Sun Also Rises' by Ernest Hemingway
The Sun Also Rises is set in the Europe of the 1920s. The story takes place in Paris' fashionable Left Bank and in Pamplona and Madrid, Spain. The era in which the novel is set is one of expatriate artists and decadent living. Contemporary to F. Scott Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby, Hemingway deals with many of the same themes arising for this generation. you just try it..

Zakpotts,

Thank you!  I know of this one, of course, and should read it as part of my American literature education ;)  If you know of any good ones set in contemporary times, let me know!
