ETC registration, tax number, SSN

Hi all!

After reading ETC website over and over again, still can't find what I'm looking for, so need your help. My husband and I just moved to Malta. We are EU nationals. We got our ID cards already, that was fast and easy. Now, how do we go about getting a Tax number, a Social Security number? Do we have to get them right away or apply when we find jobs? As far as ETC registration, when do they know when you arrived in the country to calculate the three month period? What happens if you are still not employed after three months have passed?

Thanks in advance.

Irina

Hi IrinaC,

Maybe you could have a look at the Malta guide, "Personal Taxation in Malta".

Wishing you all the best in your research.

Rouma.

Simply go to the job centre you can get the number from there, you dont need to have a job or even an offer of a job. You dont need to get them straight away, dont know if there is an advantage to getting them straight away - i wouldnt have thought so as you wouldnt be entitled to any benefits anyway, obviously if you have a job or an offer then you should go and get it immediately anyway.

The id cards which you already have are the required document you need and that in itself registers your existence here on Malta. But even without it your passport scanned at the airport would be the usual means to identify when you arrived but as we all know this isnt laways scanned on arrival..so thats more diffcult to answer - not that its right or proper but many people have been here for years and dont have an id card or NI number or residency.

Dont suppose anything happens even if you are unemployed as you still wouldnt get benefits as you havent paid into the system here.

NB I know you could have been entitled to uk unemployemnt benefit  (as a UK national) for upto three months...but you do have to have made the arranegements and completed the forms before leaving the Uk and registering yourself with etc and the social security offices here within 7 days of arriving..plus you do have to be able to prove that you are actively here to seek work.

Good luck
