Moving to the Maldives!

Post new topic

HenkHout

Hello everyone,

I'm moving to the Maldives in April, I believe I will be staying in Male.   I'm a born and raised NYer currently living in the British Virgin Islands and I just wanted to say hello, and ask a few questions.  I will be working as a pilot at one of the seaplane companies, and wanted to know if any of you know what kind of housing that they normally provide?  What are the prices to rent a single bedroom or a two bedroom/bathroom place go for, monthly?  Any places I should avoid?  Must see? etc...

Thanks for your time,

Henk

edvilyn

Hi my friend...how are you??
are you goin to work in M.A.T. or in T.M.A.???
I have some pilot Canadian friends who works in that said companies and i visits they're places as well.. They have a good accommodation,so don't worry..seaplane companies provides good housing for their employees...! :)

Hey edvilyn,
Thanks for the quick response. Yes I got a job offer from TMA, and I should arrive in Male around the middle of April or whenever the work permit and required paperwork goes through.  Thanks for the heads up, and happy to hear that.  How is life there for an Expat?  I hear not much to do on the days off, coming from New York City I'm a bit concerned about the lack of night life, are there any places close to Male that I can enjoy a beer or two?  Nonetheless I'm very excited to move to the Maldives and live in such a unique place in the world!

Hopefully we can share a couple of beers soon.

ohhh,,T.M.A.!! Congrats!!
Life here is so boring, man :( You know,Male'is just a "small island"..  but if your a beach lover this is a great place!!
..but night life..well,forget about it!
anyways, for beers, you can have it right after your work..It's very near from your work place..at Hulhule' Island Hotel (in champs bar/pool bar),it's the only place near Male' where expats can have drinks...!

see you soon!

p.s.
I don't like beers,only hard drinks... ehehhe :P

Hey Henk,

Been here for a week now but have'nt been out of the island 'Male' except Hulhule which where the Airport (my workplace) is located... drinks and nighlife - you won't get much of it as what edvilyn mentioned, but living in Maldives as you said, (is a unique place in the world) is definitely full of surprises and a one heck of an adventure to explore!

Welcome to Maldives very soon!

Cheers!

Hey Eve,

Thanks for the reply, yeah I guess I shouldn't count on any nightlife in the maldives.  But I'm okay with that I guess.  What have you done on your time off, I realize you have only been there a week, but have you found places that you like, food, shops etc...  How is your housing, are you happy with it?

Hey Edvilyn,

Are there ferries that run late, from island to island? When is the last Ferry from the airport to Male?  Also I'm a bit concerned about internet in the apartment, do you guys have WIfi, or is it all cell phone 3g 4g stuff?

Thanks Ladies for all your help, I'm starting to get excited for the big move!

Hi Henk,

In my first 3 days in Male i was staying in the company's guest house and it was really nice with amazing view of the sea from my bedroom and living room balcony. Unfortunately i was shifted to a different building with not so pleasant view of the neighborhood/building... Male is the city which has the narrowest roads/streets i have seen in the world and it quite dissapointed me in a way with all the reckless riders (very unsafe) :-|

Accomodation wise, my current one i must say is one of the safest in terms of security. And they have provided me with a bachelors pad fully furnished, with wifi and cable complete with all the stuffs u need - from appliances to blankets and pillows and kitchen wares...

Last weekend i did some cleaning and arranging since i immediately started working the day after i arrived. I went for a short walk around the city and didn't find 'much' so far... we'll see this coming weekend and sure let you know.

Ciao for the moment!

Eve

edvilyn

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking about moving to Male. I searched through internet and found a few motives to hold back. I still have a unaware and please inform me if you can, how much do you spend for food in one month? What means a decent salary in Male?

Thanks
Mon

Hi Henk!!

So how is the life going?
You get to fly all the  guests to the hotel island?
How is the night life treating you?
I would be moving to a hotel island in the coming months (waiting for my contract) and would like to have your feedback!!
Cheers
Nat

i have my check ride tomorrow morning, been in training here for the past 2 weeks.
Then, yes I'll be flying the guest to many different resorts.  The nice thing about this job is that we overnight at the resorts about 4 nights a week.
nightlife? yeah like they say... not much, here in MAle',  I go to HIH where some expats can enjoy a beer, but other than that, we just hang out at a restaurant or coffee shop and hang out.  Its important to bring stuff that will make you feel like home.  Another pilot and i play frisbee everyday at 4pm, just to keep our minds from going nuts.  But all in all this place is great so far.  The paperwork/work permits can take a bit long... just remember everything runs on island time, not the timeframe your usually used too.

what resort are you gonna work at?  do you know if TMA fly's there or MAT?

glwelden

Hi guys, and welcome Henk!
Just caught on to this thread so you must be pretty settled in by now and guessing you've met a few people - I always see a massive group of pilots whenever I'm at HIH so guess you've found the local drinking hole by now ;)
I've been here since November but travel a lot with my job so haven't really forged myself a good network in Male yet - it would be good to get in touch with some people and go for a beer (or something harder Edvilyn!)
Hear from you soon!
