hi raysmc, istanbul has lots of places for social and nightlife.
for european part you can go to taksim, ortaköy, bebek, etiler and nişantaşı. however, ortaköy, bebek, etiler and nişantası are not so cheap and i don't like the nightlife there. if you ask for my opinion taksim is the best place for having fun at anytime of the day. you can go to some clubs pubs, or just get your beer from the minimarket and drink it by the galata tower(tünel). taksim is there for you to explore and enjoy, but always be careful.
i don't have any recommendations about where to stay, the choice is up to you(you should check the websites). and also keep in mind that you can get to taksim easily by subway, bus, dolmuş and funicular. if you have other questions, feel free to ask.

Taksim has great nightlife/dinky bars tucked away in side streets off the main drag. There are many reasonably priced pensions there and of course in Sultanahmet too. Easy to travel between the 2 areas by tram and train.

Half of the fun is finding your own way/exploring as I have in Turkey including Istanbul since 2005.I have many frends who travel and do not rerquire a 'guide'. Also many young Turkish guys Offer their services to be 'guides', especially in Sultanhmet, Bodrum etc. So readers beware!
