Hope you'll like Marseille as I enjoyed my 4 years stay in this city of character during my studies. There are a lot of things to do in this city: you can visit "les Calanques", "la Bonne Mère", "la Vieille Charité", "l'île du Frioul" in taking a boat from "le Vieux Port". By the way, I give you the advice to go to have a drink in the pub called O'Malley at the address: 9 Quai Rive Neuve (located in the "Vieux port"). Indeed, in this pub you'll meet a lot of expats who are English speakers so it could be helpful for you.
