housing amongs locals in Ecuador

Post new topic

Hi Everyone :-)  My husband & I are moving to Ecuador as soon as we possibly can (within the next 3-6 months).  I've been looking at the small towns on the Pacific coast, however, all the real estate that is shown is either a condo or a home within a "gated" community.  We would like to live in a single family home outside the gated communities and become a part of a local community (i.e., not an expat community).  Are there such homes available?

Thanks,
Sharon

Loving Ecuador

Sure there are, sometimes real estates tend to show only the highest priced and/or higher end properties. There are plenty of regular homes in very safe areas among ecuadorians. I live in one! I can show you the Salinas area when you come to scout the area. Take care.

Hi Sharon , mywife and I have lived in 3 different Ecuador  cities and have never lived among Americans. Presently we live in Puerto Lopez where there are only a few ex pats. It is relatively inexpensive and very beautiful. Check it out on line. There is not a large number of rentals but they exist. Puerto Lopez is about 16,000. The govt is about to spend (actually already) $75million on Puyerto Lopez. New modern pier, fishermans  building, handicap event building, a new market place and next year is the boardwalk. Prices for property are veryyyyyy reasonable NOW but that will change soon once these projects are completed. Its a natural course of events , Take Care

Hi Sharon,
Yes of course it's possible to find such places.  there are lots of smaller villages where one can "share" life with the locals...and these are usually the safest ones.
You probably need to put solid external doors, and windows with bars on, but otherwise no problems.
We live in Manta (in a rented condo) but have shopped around for properties close by.  You can either buy an existing property and do it up, or consider buying a plot of land and putting up a house designed to suit your needs.
We have some friends who are having a house built (in record time) by an American who has a good track record building properties very economically, and VERY quickly. He works mostly with fellow Americans, and Canadians.
If you are interested let me know and I'll send you my e-mail address.
In any case good luck. Ecuador is a great country, the people exceptionally friendly..........plus, plus, plus...
