Looking to start an Expat life

Post new topic

KarenaC

Hello!

I am looking to start my life as an Expat and am in need of some advice. I will graduate this May with a degree in Engineering. I am generally wondering how one gets started: how do you find a job, what country is a good starter for a newbie, how much money does it take to start out.

Thanks so much for taking a moment, and I cannot wait to build some friendships and learn some new things on this site!

ECS

that's a hard question to answer but I'd say the easiest place would be:

1) somewhere you have connections (family, a grad program or internship you can get via your school, friends, job contacts)
2) somewhere that you can speak the language

there's not really such thing as a "starter country", unless you count working for the US military. Then you can live in a pseudo-American bubble, have lots of help with paperwork, and still occasionally have contact with "natives". That's not usually what people consider being an expat though.

Hi Karena,

On top of the 2 very good points ECS made on his list I would say that you should also consider only those countries where your degree in Engineering would be recognized without a lot of bureaucracy and one where the labor market is not already saturated, unless you can get a job in a multinational company that will accept your degree.

For example, here in Brazil only medical doctors, lawyers, etc., go through all the trouble of having their degrees recognized since it is such a bureaucratic process. Many engineers coming from abroad work for multinational companies that have operations in their home country and who have accepted their credentials.

Hi Karena.

Hello Karena,

Focus on what you can control.
Oftentimes we overlook the little things we can do to make life easier while obsessing about the big things we canÂ’t do.
WhatÂ’s coming tomorrow might not be easy; or it might fulfill you in ways you didnÂ’t know to imagine. WhatÂ’s certain is that it will come, and when it gets here, youÂ’ll respond to it, learn from it, and move into another tomorrow full of endless possibilities.
I sense that you are overwhelmed by the thought of starting a new life elsewhere. I see many things that you have going for you; intelligence, youth, your will to succeed, and a need for adventure. My immediate advice...remember the power of the internet for research purposes.

Good Luck!
