Salaries for Lawyers

Post new topic

gaus81

Dear Members,

I am an Intellectual Property Lawyer with Engineering and Law Degrees from India. I have 4 years of work experience at Intellectual Property Lawyer from a German MNC in India.

Currently, I am considering an offer from a law firm in KSA, the offer is as follows:
1- Basic salary:  US$ 2000 monthly.
2- Housing Allowance: US$ 8000 annually. This amount can be split into 2 payments every 6 months or can be paid on a monthly basis.
3- Transportation : US 100 monthly and we can help you find 2 wheels transport ( a loan to buy one).
4- Air tickets for you and 4 family members maximum annually and can only be paid at the end of the year.
5- Health Insurance for you and 4 members of family. This is actually paid directly to Health insurance company.
6- One paid month vacation annually. May be split in 2 weeks every 6 months.
7- Annual bonus  as a function of months basic salary depending on performance and billed hours. We do not have a problem in making this  as a percentage of billed and collected amounts of billed hours.
8- Re-evaluation of basic salary after 6 months from beginning.

Is this is a good offer for a lawyer in KSA with 4 years of exposure? What are salaries of lawyers with my kind of exposure?

Your suggestion and comments are really valuable for me to consider further negotiating the offer or maybe to decline the offer.

Regards
Gaurav

the offer is average as lawyers are having good salaries if they have international specially American experience.
you must clear with  Re-evaluation..

vivek22

as mentioned above , Basic is on the minimum range of a scale for legal professionals. You can negotiate to USD 3,000 easily.

Two wheels - you may die if drive a two wheeler in 47+ degree C temp here. It is useless.

Housing ok if you want to live alone and not with family. Generally it is 25% to 40% of Basic.

And if you have work exp with German MNC, you should get more as there are many German engg firms doing business here.

So far whereever I am involved, I have seen  legal fees paid by clients to legal consultant firms are mimium USD 300 per hour and go upto Euro 700 per hour plus expenses in Saudi Arabia.

Thanks Muzhi and vivek 22 for replying.

@ Muzhi: I have raised the question about re-evaluation and he mentioned that generally the basic salary range for my kind of lawyers in the department are US$ 2000- 4000 depending on experience and languages of work( English, French and Arabic only).

@ vivek 22: Currently, the law firm is not willing to raise the Basic Salary before re-evaluation after 6 months. However, I am negotiating on the Bonus as a function of Billing hours. According to the discussions, the bonus can be in range of 5-9 months of Basic Salary.

Your further suggestions are highly valuable to me.

its totally upto you because you will live in Kingdom like executive with your family so the monthly expenses will be around MAX 3500 to 4000SAR/month (depends upon you) . you are getting the house allowance so as per my thinking you must accept this offer if they raise the salary in intervals.

Hi! Gaurav,
As you mentioned u have abt. 4 yrs. work ex., the main point is how well will this opportunity augment ur experiences and fit into longer career...
Typically KSA gives u a bigger opportunity to handle/lead things at level which u mayn't get elsewhere but the quality of the opportunity/ project itself may not be highly advanced as in other markets...

gaus81

Dear Kymadoce,

The profile is:

Supervision of paralegal and assistants work and some of the lawyers  for different types of IP work including patents, trademarks, trademark litigation, patent litigation,  anti-counterfeiting, reporting office actions to clients and advising on best course of actions and most of the time legal opinions on local regulatory matters for the pharmaceutical industry and sometimes commenting on local laws(commercial) and legal updates for our web site.

Till now, I have been an individual contributor in a in-house corporate department where I will be sending some work to law firms and performing some work by myself.

The offered profile give me some part of people manager role and law firm environment. This will surely add up into my profile. However, I am not sure how this will be valued back in India or any other geographies where I amy like to try in future...

Kymadoce

Exactly, I know in banking industry Middle East experience doesn't really add up when moving back. But the opportunity  I have here is not available in India easily though the work within that profile done here is at a basic level as compared to other markets.
Have a back up plan so that in case u don't like here u can move back at-least in a Year.

I am in total confirmation with you over your points. Lets see how it works out.

Basically, I was really looking for a change from my current professional life and have made out 2-3 plans already and this opportunity was somehow part of the plans. If it doesn't work out, I feel I have one open till beginning of May and one backup is ready even thereater....keeping fingers crossed.

It's really good to connect to you. If I happen to be in KSA, will surely like to meet you..
