Considering the move...lots of questions

Post new topic

Hi all.

I'm seriously considering the possibility of a move to Hyderabad and I have a ton of questions.  Any help and advice would be much appreciated.  So, here goes...with just a few of my initial questions...

My cat.  I can't imagine moving without my cat, but I really don't know how he would do flying - much less flying half way around the world.  Has anyone had any experiences with moving your pet - good or bad?

Housing.  After an initial stay in corporate housing, I will need to find housing.  I'm a single guy in my early 40s who wouldn't mind being in an area where I can enjoy the company of other single expats and locals.  Any particular neighborhoods to focus on?  I will be working in Hi Tech City.

Gay Expats?  Are there any gay expats living in Hyderabad?  Can you give an honest assessment of life for a gay guy?  (not that I am looking for cruising spots...just wondering if there are any other gay expats in the area?

Tax implications for US citizens.  If anyone is able to explain the tax implications to a financial dummy - but intelligent in most other areas - I would be happy to hear it!

Of course, any other advice you may have would be awesome.

Namaste.

Christine

The process is complicated, but certainly not impossible. You'll need to do your research, but the experience will be quite inconsistent. I have a colleague who brought her dog to India from the US and it was a costly affair. In India, you need help from facilitators or 'agents' who can get the paperwork done in return for fees.

Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills are two nice and central areas, likely more receptive to foreigners. Closer to work would be Madhapur and Kondapur, but may be more conservative and slower paced.

I know a few odd gay people, but of course everything in India is very discreet. Don't be openly gay, and you should be fine.

Through the year I earn a dual income in India and the US. As a US citizen myself, I file tax return in India based on my income here and file a consolidated tax return in the US. It goes something like this, you will pay taxes in the US based on total salary, less the taxes you've already paid in India. It's best to get a US tax accountant to process your return as it can get tricky.
Indian individual tax assessment year is from April 1 to March 31st. This means that to file a consolidated US return you may have to file for an extension.

Give yourself a month or two to check out the place before making a permanent move (bring cat, etc.)

Thanks.  Can anyone  give the average monthly rent for one person.  I hear that 2-3 bedrooms are pretty standard.  I've also been told about $500/month for Banjara Hills area.  Does that sound about right?

Hi Greg, 500$ is ok for banjara hills for 2 bedroom but if it is shared flat/house then rent will be less.
