Hi!  I grew up in the Philippines and I'll be moving to Beijing in July.  Look forward to meeting some Filipinos!

properlogic

Beijing?  Damn, that's pretty far from where I'm at, Hangzhou.

Just to tell you a little about myself.  I'm 28 years old.  I was born in the USA then I moved to the Philippines when I was 8.  I went to school in the Philippines and graduated in 2002 from an IB league school.

In 2003 I moved back to the states, Las Vegas to be exact!  Anyways, I stayed there for 10 years (2012) until I finally decided that I wanted something more.  The partying was great, but 10 years of that is enough to last a lifetime.

I wanted to see the world; to have rich and fulfilling experiences.  So I got TEFL certified and started applying all over Asia.

First, I went to Sri Lanka to teach, and that was an AMAZING experience.  Words can't describe how much I enjoyed it there.  Mainly, because the crowd I was with were just straight up genuine people (who loved to party!)  Not to mention I lived a 5 minute walk away from the beach, and a 3 hour bus ride from this place called Unawatuna.  It's like paradise!

After my contract was up I put out some more applications for China, Malaysia (I really want to go there), Thailand, Vietnam, etc.. and China responded.  So again, I went with that.

And that brings me up to the present, in Hangzhou teaching English to children.  I can honestly say, I have no regrets with my decision.  The only issue I have is the language barrier but I am working on that daily.  Chinese is definitely a useful language to learn.

It's been a while since I've been around any Filipinos and I miss speaking the language (and eating the food!).  So that's why I joined this forum, to find out if there are any close by.  At the same time, I enjoy good company and I am not biased to race (I just want to put that out there).

So I'll be out and about in Hangzhou and if anyone wants to connect, hit me up.

Right now is a gift, that's why we call it the present

Lew,

12,500rmb?  I'm guessing that's for a year?  If so, that's GREAT!  That comes out to around 1,000RMB a month? (That doesn't sound right)

Apartments range from 2000RMB/month and up.  I'm moving into a two bedroom apartment with one of the other teachers and we are paying 2,300RMB a month (Which is a ridiculously great deal).

I was looking at another apartment, which is a studio apartment, and they were trying to charge me 2,500RMB a month.

It's quite devastating actually because the way they do the rent here is you pay for 3 months at a time.  So you have to get that money together.  It's also quite a headache because when you first move in you have to pay for 3 months up front, PLUS a month for deposit.

So you're actually paying for 4 months, right off the back.  And you have to pay for your utilities every 2 months.  So getting settled is quite bothersome actually.

Anyways, keep in touch and let me know how everything goes.  If you do come to Hangzhou, just know that meron kng kababayan dito!  Ilaan taon ka ba?

lew ian

tol,

thanks a lot for the info. 12,500 RMB a month tol. does that sound gud? anyway, you sounded like its quite exhausting lookin for apartment in hangzhou considering the payment. I am now 33yo, pure Filipino-bred, taga davao ako. Ive been to australia for 2 years and earned my masters. Now, Im teaching in the university. so, what u do for a living tol? musta naman life jan? nightlife? hhehehe gimik nyt? heheh

properlogic

Lew,

There is no way any place will charge you 12,000RMB a month for an apartment.  My friend has a house and pays about 5000RMB a month FOR A HOUSE.

If I were you I'd check with whoever offered you that deal.

Yes. It can be quite tiring, but then again moving to a new country is always a little hectic.

For me, it's totally worth it though. =)

lew ian

helo tol,

medyo d tayo nagkakaintindihan..... i will be paid 12,500RMB salary for a month. I got two kids in the Philippines and a wife.... dont have idea kung sapat kaya sweldo na yan? xenxia sa kakulit ko tol. i dont want to gamble kasi where i would end up loser. pamilya kasi nakataya pag mag abroad eh. hope u understand. malaki na ba yan? 12,500RMB salary a month? typical for a single guy like u, how much roughly do u spend for a month to cover all the expenses tol?

properlogic

Yeah man.. That's a good pay.  More than enough to live here.  You'll typically spend about 4000RMB a month (And that's if you go out every weekend and party like me!)

lew ian

thanks a lot! you enlighten my mind..... hope to meet you soon, thats it, if i wil get hired hehhehe

Ey Properlogic,

It's pretty interesting how similar our backgrounds are.  I was born in the States as well but was raised in the Philippines.  I moved back to the States for undergrad (California) including a semester abroad in England.  I knew I wanted to live overseas after graduation so I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer doing educational development in northeastern Thailand. In the 4 and half years I was in Thailand I got to teach in a variety of settings including some time with the International School of Bangkok.  I was impressed with the quality of the school (and how well they took care of their teachers) and it made me realize that it was the type of system I wanted to be involved with.  I moved back to the States to pursue a Masters in Education and get more teaching experience.  So I've been teaching 5th grade the past 2 years while finishing up grad school.  I recently just got an offer to teach at an International School in Beijing and I'll be moving there at the end of July.  Definitely looking forward to doing some traveling around China.  Never been before but I'm excited for the opportunity.  ALso looking forward to connecting with some Filipino expats in China.  How far is Hangzhou from Beijing? Have you been to Beijing?

So yeah man, look forward to meeting you and other Filipinos.  I figure I'll be traveling a bit and I'll be sure to hit up Hangzhou.

Peace

properlogic

Lew Ian:  Sure.  Anytime.. Keep me posted with how everything goes.  If you come to Hangzhou, I'll be here to help you get settled in!

Pcantonio: That is a trip, man!  Where'd you study in the PI?

pcantonio

Ey man, I went to La Salle.  Where did you go?

properlogic

Brent International School!  You know it?

pcantonio

Definitely know it.  My cousins went there and I have a friend teaching there as well. Small world man! I sent you a PM as well trying to pick your brain regarding some questions I had about life in China.
