Ubon is a nice place and cheaper than Bangkok. 

There is a small expat population there.
You may have communication problems as not many people speak english.

Check online as there are expat owned bars there and one used to advertise accommodation.   

Basic spoken thai is not too hard to learn, forget trying to read or write it. 

There are places that can teach you and as you will have time on your hands I suggest you start lessons sooner rather than later.

Joining another expat online forum specialising in asia may help you.

Yes I am looking for english friendship for occasionnal coffee.
I live in a small rice and fruit farm 15 km outside Ubon - nobody speak English around so I get boring speaking to myself :-)
It would be nice to chat once in a while with other english speaking of any nationalities.

If you're thinking about living in Thailand long term as a retiree and not married, you haven't got enough money per month for annual extensions unless you have some money stashed away in a Thai bank account. You'll need 65k/month or 800k in a Thai bank account. $1,500 is far away from 65,000 Baht. You'll have to use an agent to be able to apply for annual extensions. When you were married you just needed 40k/month for a 1 year extension based on marriage.

I'm Nelson B and have been in Ubon now for 16 years and yes $1,500 is not enough to obtail any kind of one year visa. If you could manage to have someone lending you 800,000 bath to put in Thai Bank you may have hope but still $1,500. However you can make it with that small amount.
Maybe get a new country wife as they are much better woman and less demanding and it will be better to leave in the country with this small budget. Good Luck to you.

The 800k must be a foreign deposit and the guy who lends the money can't get the money back in full. You must have those 800k in the account for 2+3 months and not below 400k för another 7 months. Then you must top it up to 800k again for next 1 year extension. So, just borrowing money won't work unless you have a friend or family member who can lend you the money long term.
