Power-cuts in Malta

Post new topic

SMeddie

HI All

Quick question – How often are these power-cuts in Malta?

Is it something I have to prepare for in advance or it just happens once in a blue moon?

Please let me know of all your experiences and solutions.

Thanks
Meddie

In Malta or in Mellieha?
In Mellieha were we live we have had one unannounced and one when they replaced a power cable and notified us before hand, thats since Jan. Last year perhaps a couple as well, so no worse than the UK I guess.

(You can look on the elec company website for planned outages)

In Sliema last year I had a few outages, once all day. That was when I lived on the 9th floor and it was 40 degrees outside - walking up 9 flights and having no air conditioning once you get there = unhappy Steve lol

SMeddie

Thanks Terry

You have saved me some cash - I was heading to Homebase to buy some weird equipments!

Clearly a torch and some candles would be sufficient if its once in a blue moon.

Cheers

Notifications of scheduled power suspensions are usually printed in the newspapers and online.

just be aware though that some outages can last 8-9 hrs - our last one was about 4-5 hours. torches candles and maybe a emergency light order of the day they never come in wrong...

You'll not think its off topic if it happens to you and you've not planned for it like the others have said :D

An outage that lasts all day in the middle of summer makes you realise how much we depend on electricity (air conditioning, fridge, freezer, water pumps for showers, tv, internet, and lifts for those in apartments). Trust me, its not pleasant, especially when your landlord thought it would be a great idea to have a south facing top floor apartment with lots of large windows!!

Well said Steve....

For a second there, I forgot that the water pumps for showers also use electricity. Now that would make me not a happy camper!

I actually thought areas like Valletta/Sliema/St.Julians would be excused from power outage

Thanks

why would you think that Smeddie...?

Toon - I could be naive here (please let me know if I am)but when I visited Malta, Valletta/Sliema/St.Julians looked rather posh compared to other areas I visited hence the thought..... FYI -  I also visited Mdina, Qawra, ST Paul's Bay and Bugibba

Thanks
Meddie

Toon

so in your world posh means no power cuts...lol

in terms of the way the places look I might agree but i dont believe it to be so - you have to remember st pauls bay was a village and then they built up the areas of qawra and bugibba to cater for tourism - rather like a tourist village.

id say St J / Sliema were more cosmopolitan .... and being so close to the capital they have to compete with it - but it think that has abosolutely no bearing on power cuts.... unless someone knows to the contrary.

Maybe I am too but this is starting to smell something 'iffy'.
Triple cut'n'paste posts, making no sense and some, as far as I'm concerned, close to the knuckle and sexist 'jokes'.
SMeddie, you are NOT funny. Think about it.

That's not going to be good for your food in the freezer

Toon

freezers are usually ok - well so far - we have only been subjected to one like that in 5yrs - the norm if there is such a thing here is upto 1-4 hrs.

Hi Terry,

If I am not wrong, the last one we had here, was just about a week or ago, more or less, in the morning.
I remember I have called my landlady to check if was something to do with the electricity in the apartment, but then went outside and of the workers told me that was supposed to be a few hours cut. As you said, he also told me it was announced on their website.

As it was the first time it happened since I am here, just got a bit concerned :)
