I am an American seeking a job in China/Hong Kong

Post new topic

Hello my name is Nicholas Wilson. I am a 26 years of age and just recently toured in Hong Kong as a tourist. I also visited China, Macao, and Taiwan to see the culture of modern Asia. Now I would like to seek long term stay in Asia to study the culture more. I noticed that many companies are looking for native english teachers and have taught a few students english in the past and would like to give back to the community by teaching the english language. My email is nickbean06@live.com and my skype name is nickbean81 for interested employers. Thank you in advance.

Teaching can be very rewarding (or frustrating). There are a few basic requirements you will need to fulfil.

Only establishments registered with the government can issue you the means to obtain the required Z visa you need to work legally.

You cannot legally work on any other visa or change any other visa for a Z visa once in China despite what you may be told.

You will need at least a bachelors degree (in any subject)
A TEFL or equivalent teaching qualification.
Preferably 2 years teaching experience.

Lower qualification may be acceptable in less desirable locations. The higher your qualifications the higher status job you might get.

Jobs usually include accommodation, return flight and some kind of medical insurance.

You can find jobs through agencies but be aware that they are more interested in their commission than your welfare.

There are also blogs and forums where you can find jobs and invaluable advice.

Eg eslcafedotcom  I tried posting the link but my account got blocked) :(
Good luck :)

If you need to improve your Chinese skill to find a good job in China, or understand well Chinese culture, you may try ownote.com. It's an innovative and useful system to learn Chinese.

You can go to study Chines at university in Beijing, and you will find easily something to do at the same time.
