Business for expats

Post new topic

Jenlord

Hello guys,

I have been to Malaysia before on a visit visa on holidays and I intend to setup a business in kuala lumpur. Probably a mini market or a gaming zone. How much capital do I need to start up with? What is the procedure to go through all this? Currently I am living in Pakistan. Anyone who can help me out with it? Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Hello Jenlord.

I think that you should browse the other discussions on the Working in Kuala Lumpur Forum so as to obtain more informations.

Thanks and good luck

You will need to set up a company to open a business in Malaysia and then get a permit from the local authority e.g. DBKL:

Gaming is OK unless it involves gambling which is illegal in Malaysia (but I guess you know that, coming from Pakistan)

Hello,
Thanks for your reply. How much capital you think I need to register a company and run a mini market(shop to rent) or a gaming zone(shop to rent) ? Any clue?

Just what KL needs is another mini market........

Have you done any market research? So many small time operators open then close 3 months later. There are 3 established brands here inc 7-11 and everywhere. A saturated market place at least round where I live and work. Often all 3 in a row battling it out as the independents go bust! Why do you as a foreigner think you can do better than the locals in this case? The 99 mart is cheaper than the big supermarkets as they have bulk buying power so how can you compete?

A gaming zone would require a very hard licence to get. Expensive

Be sure to add to the cost of buying a business the requirements that the government has to invest a minimum of RM 500,000 when becoming a business owner. You will still need a work permit as well and there are restrictions on who you can employ to help you run the business. Students can work at certain times when the university/college break is more than 7 days in length.  Expect to be raided regularly for immi checks and other people interested in protecting your business.....

Would be interesting for Jenlord to have an unbiased view of owning mini-market and what to expect in Malaysia.
