Sad to say that the 18 year old girl, native of São Paulo, who was attacked Monday afternoon by a shark at the Praia de Boa Viagem in Recife - PE has died as a result of her injuries.

There have been 59 reported shark attacks on the Pernambuco coast since the state began keeping records in 1992. This has been the 24th fatal attack. 23 of these attacks have taken place at the Praia de Boa Viagem, 17 at the Praia de Piedade.

Some information to think about!

Over one third of shark attacks take place during the period of the full moon. 70.2% of the shark attack victims were between the age of 14 and 25.

There are warning signs all over these beaches, you can't miss them, yet people still go in the water.

Tell you anything????

When last there, I learned of a slaughterhouse on the shores of a small tributary to the south of Recife.   It was reported that the blood would flow into the river, and out to sea, attracting these sharks.  I understood that a drop in shark attacks was directly connected to shutting down the slaughterhouse, but perhaps not!

Hi Douglas,

How are you these days my friend?

Actually I think the drop in shark attacks in Recife has more to do with the abundance of warning signs on the beaches, keeping swimmers in the shallower waters within the zone confined by the reefs, rather than anything else.

Gosh, can't imagine how much worse it must have been with a slaughterhouse nearby.....   só Brasil mesmo!
